Paintings with Oranges

Van Gogh and Toulouse-Latrec favored the color orange in many of their paintings. This dynamic and flamboyant color brings warmth to any space and has an ancient history. The Grand Canyon is a painter's paradise... every morning and every sunset the canyon looks different. This painting was inspired by an early morning out at Hopi Point. As the clouds moved slowly overhead, the first rays of dawn shot through the cloud layer and illuminated the canyon below in an ever-changing dance of color and light. I used thick, expressive strokes of oil paint to capture the strength and majesty of the vista. This was my first attempt at painting an abstract pile of maple leaves. I loved creating patterns of color and contrast to keep the eye continually moving through the piece. Inspired by van Gogh's love for sunflowers and Monet's garden (he created his own water lily garden so he could paint in his own backyard), I planted my own sunflower field last spring. This is a painting of a sunflower bouquet gathered from my field. I searched for heirloom seeds that would grow the large-headed sunflowers that make such great paintings. I draped an orange cloth behind the sunflowers for a moody, impressionistic look. My brush strokes are laid down in thick, expressive strokes, and I used a limited palette of only five oil paint colors.

Driving the curving roads into Elk (just south of Mendocino), I came suddenly upon this vineyard in full autumn glory -- pumpkin oranges and sunflower yellows. I love it when vineyards are planted so that the rows of vines seem to overlap and form contrasting patterns in the hills. It brings me into the painting, letting my eye explore the contours of the sloping hillsides. This painting captures everything I love about painting California wine country.

Exploring southern France, I was inspired by the high plateaus in Provence, which are covered in endless lavender fields. The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."

I visited Etretat on France's Normandy coast to explore the unique cliffs that Monet painted many times. Like Monet, I was inspired by the white limestone cliffs and the reflected colors of the cliffs, the water, and the sky. This is the second painting I have created from this location. Hiking along the trail at the top of the cliffs, I could see wildflowers growing against the turquoise waters below. The golden hour light in June lasted for hours... I loved seeing how the white limestone cliffs changed color until the sun finally set at 9:30 PM. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

Etretat, France, was famously painted by Monet. In Monet's words, “Étretat is becoming more and more amazing….the beach with all its fine boats; it is superb, and I am enraged not to be more skillful in rendering all this. I would need two hands and hundreds of canvases.” Monet inspired me to visit Etretat this year, and I was likewise amazed by the brilliant colors, beautiful compositions, and abundant wildflowers. This petite painting captures a view from the south side of Etretat.
