Paintings with Turquoise

Reminiscent of the Caribbean Sea or a soothing tropical paradise, the turquoise mineral was mined by many ancient civilizations from the Egyptians to the Aztecs. The color, found as well in peacock feathers, certain butterflies, and exotic fish, was certain to find its way onto the palettes of artists throughout the ages.  Erin Hanson employs this calm and soothing color to capture the grandeur of big skies or big waters in locations such as Big Sur, Pebble Beach, Seventeen Mile Drive, Torrey Pines, Lake Tahoe, and Borrego Springs, to name a few.

After visiting Monet's garden in Giverny last summer, I traveled south in search of the original water lily gardens that first inspired Monet and supplied him with his water lily plants. The Latour-Mariac water lily farm was incredible--there were thousands of varieties and colors of water lilies--in fact, this is where the original non-white, cold-hardy water lilies were bred. The colorful pastel hues of the new varieties became hugely popular across Europe, and Monet played a large part in popularizing their delicate blooms. To me, this painting of Latour-Mariac water lilies encapsulates the history of the water lily image in impressionism. NOTE: "Seranade of Blooms" will be on display at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas until July 15th, 2025. There is one vista I love to paint at the southern edge of Carmel... there is a little bridge between the houses, and if I clamber down underneath the bridge, I can see a beautifully iconic rocky vista with Monterey cypress trees growing in overlapping layers. Exploring the French countryside one misty morning, while our riverboat was docked along the Seine, I saw field after field of pale blue flowers that seemed to glow under the cloudy dawn light. The tour guide explained these were fields of flax, which bloom for only one day. I feel very fortunate to have seen these beautiful flowers during the single day they were in bloom.

I returned to Japan this year (after exploring their famous Japanese maple tree fall colors), this time to experience sakura -- the Japanese cherry blossom. I visited Etretat on France's Normandy coast to explore the unique cliffs that Monet painted many times. Like Monet, I was inspired by the white limestone cliffs and the reflected colors of the cliffs, the water, and the sky. This is the second painting I have created from this location. Hiking along the trail at the top of the cliffs, I could see wildflowers growing against the turquoise waters below. The golden hour light in June lasted for hours... I loved seeing how the white limestone cliffs changed color until the sun finally set at 9:30 PM. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

Highway 1 has been an endless source of inspiration for me as a painter. I first started painting the crystal turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean about twelve years ago when I started exploring Paso Robles and the coastal region between Hearst Castle and Big Sur. I love painting swirling waves of white sea foam against aquamarine water. When orange poppies bloom along Highway 1, there is even more color to inspire me.

In this painting, I wanted to make the yellow sunflower blooms glow by contrast against a green backdrop. I used a limited palette of only five colors, pre-mixing a wide range of hues before I picked up my brush to paint. I then painted swiftly, creating a sense of movement within the piece by the texture of my brushwork. I tried not to go over the same point on the canvas more than once, getting each stroke "right the first time," without blending or layering.

Looking southward from a high bluff in Mendocino County, I watch crashing waves and swirling turquoise waters as far as I can see. The rocky coastline of Northern California, dotted with sea stacks and steep cliffs, is a landscape painter's dream. I used a limited palette of five colors to capture the rich hues of this coastal scene. I try not to overlap my brush strokes when I paint, which gives my brush strokes a highly textured, painterly feel.

After exploring California's Highway 1 up and down countless times, I have picked out my favorite section of coastline -- just north of Point Sur (which is between Big Sur and Carmel.) This coastline has everything: expansive white sandy beaches, crystal aquamarine waters, and rocky outcroppings casting long blue shadows. It has everything I love about creating coastal paintings.
