Paintings of California

California has an incredible diversity of landscapes: from the high peaks of Yosemite and the Sierras to the sloping hillsides of wine countries such as Mariposa, Napa, and Paso Robles; from rugged rocky coastlines to smoothly curving sandy beaches; from the high desert to Death Valley; from redwood forests to Joshua Tree forests; California has something for everyone. Home to the revivification of impressionism in the United States, Californian artists inspired the California Impressionist Movement and California Plein Air painting in the 1900s. This movement lives on in Erin Hanson's open impressionist works, many of which depict the varied landscapes found in her home state. One of Hanson's eponymous galleries is located in California's beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea, an area that has inspired artists including Paul Hampden Dougherty, Mary DeNeale Morgan, Armin Hansen, Roi Clarkson Colman, and, of course, Erin Hanson.

There is one vista I love to paint at the southern edge of Carmel... there is a little bridge between the houses, and if I clamber down underneath the bridge, I can see a beautifully iconic rocky vista with Monterey cypress trees growing in overlapping layers. When there is a light mist in the air, the picture becomes moody and intriguing. This painting was inspired by my last trip to Carmel.

Driving north along Highway 1 from Cambria, on the way to Hearst Castle, you see some of the most beautiful scenery along the Pacific Coast. I have always been drawn to the romantic shapes and multi-colored bark of the eucalyptus tree, and the way these trees were framed by the summer-colored hills beyond made me pull my van around and circle back so I could get some reference shots to paint.

The early morning sunlight only has burned away all but a lingering line of mist between the hills, in this impressionistic painting of central California. The magenta underpainting plays against the green hills, creating a vibrancy of color. This epic landscape was painted on three separate panels designed to hang two inches apart. There is one grove of cypress trees near Carmel that is the most beautiful grove of cypress trees in the whole Monterey Peninsula. I visit them every time I go to Monterey. I must have painted them a dozen times already, but I love capturing their graceful branches in changing light and changing seasons. You may recognize these trees, if you find yourself driving on 17 Mile Drive.

I was driving down 17 Mile Drive in Carmel, on my way to photograph Lone Cypress at sunrise. The sky was lightening to a rich cobalt blue, and my headlights were illuminating the cypress trees in front of me. I love driving the winding roads through Paso Robles wine country. At the high elevations, I pass by sun-lit vineyards and open orchards, and when the roads dip down in the valleys, I pass beneath overhanging oak trees and hanging moss, and I can hear the sound of water trickling by in the nearby stream. This painting captures this view of Paso from between the oak trees, where crystalline light casts long shadows across the road.

Driving the curving roads into Elk (just south of Mendocino), I came suddenly upon this vineyard in full autumn glory -- pumpkin oranges and sunflower yellows. I love it when vineyards are planted so that the rows of vines seem to overlap and form contrasting patterns in the hills. It brings me into the painting, letting my eye explore the contours of the sloping hillsides. This painting captures everything I love about painting California wine country.

There is a little nook I like to photograph when I visit Carmel that has one of the best painting views, in my opinion. I have to scramble underneath a bridge, get snagged by a few blackberry bushes, and end up crouching precariously on the edge of steep cliff -- but the view of overlapping cypress trees and dramatic rock formations is totally worth it.

Highway 1 has been an endless source of inspiration for me as a painter. I first started painting the crystal turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean about twelve years ago when I started exploring Paso Robles and the coastal region between Hearst Castle and Big Sur. I love painting swirling waves of white sea foam against aquamarine water. When orange poppies bloom along Highway 1, there is even more color to inspire me.

Looking southward from a high bluff in Mendocino County, I watch crashing waves and swirling turquoise waters as far as I can see. The rocky coastline of Northern California, dotted with sea stacks and steep cliffs, is a landscape painter's dream. I used a limited palette of five colors to capture the rich hues of this coastal scene. I try not to overlap my brush strokes when I paint, which gives my brush strokes a highly textured, painterly feel.

Joshua Tree National Park is most beautiful at sunrise and sundown, when the white granite boulders begin to glow with warm hues of apricot and buttercream, while the shadows turn shades of plum and eggplant (I must be hungry.) I have been to Joshua Tree many times since I was a child, hiking, camping, rock climbing, exploring... and when the boulders start change color, I just have to stop, enamored with the color all around me, and thank God I am a painter!
