The quintessential palm oases found scattered through the desert, brilliant sunsets, and the desert itself have inspired artists throughout the centuries. Western artists like Carl Eytel, John Frost, and Erin Hanson have depicted the glorious desert landscapes found in and around Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley.

I have been doing shows in La Quinta and Palm Springs for almost twenty years. Every time I return to the desert, I am blown away again by the beautiful colors of the mountains and palm trees--especially during early morning golden hour and sunset. This painting captures a view from Highway 111, where you can see the San Jacinto mountains dusted in snow in the distance, peeking between the lanky palms.

Driving to the Indian Palm Canyons early one morning at dawn, I discovered an even more beautiful vista in the stark desert landscape around me. The gray and brown mountains and palms lit up suddenly in the first morning light, reflecting a glorious celebration of color that lasted about 20 minutes, until the sun hit the valley floor and the color washed away into the mid-morning.
