The trail to the summit of Mt Rainier is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done. Lush grasses and abundant wildflowers blanket the landscape in greens and pops of color. The peak of Mt Ranier looms above, larger than I can possibly capture on a canvas, golden clouds of fog clinging to the sides of the mountain. I used thick brush strokes of oil paint laid side-by-side on the canvas to capture the strong shapes and texture of the mountain. Delicate blooms in lavender, white, and yellow set off the foreground.

Norway is a painter's paradise--a land of dramatic fjords, epic mountain peaks, rivers, and valleys. I just returned from a 10-day photo safari through Norway's glacier-carved landscape, searching for painting inspiration. This is the first painting I created after my trip, capturing a fjord near Alesund during the golden hours of dawn.

Watching the first morning light hit Mt Rainier from Tipsoo Lake made me appreciate the beauty of the Cascades in a whole new light. The hazy morning air diffused the light, making the peak of Mt Rainier seem to loom out of nowhere. This painting is part of Erin's 2025 annual <a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/portfolio?col=the-petite-show-2025"><i>Petite Show</i></a>. The exhibition will be on display at The Erin Hanson Gallery in McMinnville, Oregon, for one day only, Saturday, November 8th. I painted this view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley (also known as the "Fruit Loop" because of all the fruit orchards). The sunflowers were in late bloom, and the first light of morning cast a ruddy glow on the snow-dappled peak of Mount Hood. Thick, expressive brush strokes laid side by side without blending create a highly textured oil painting that is alive with motion and vibrant color.

Every hundred feet or so, I would pause and look around, and each time, I was amazed at the changing vistas around me. I went to Yosemite last year to capture the beauty of the Sierra in a new light. When I arrived, the rangers were using fire to clear out the underbrush, and the valley was filled with smoke for days. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."
