Erin Hanson discovered her love for painting sunflowers a few years ago, and since then she has created a variety of colorful, impressionist works inspired by the vivacious bloom. One of the things I love about living in Oregon's Willamette Valley is visiting autumn harvest festivals. (We never had these in Southern California!) The harvest festival at Red Berry Barn has a hay ride, feeding zoo, giant slides, bouncy houses, pumpkin patch, and even a huge room full of corn kernels that you can bury yourself in (no joke.) But my favorite part of visiting Red Berry Barn every year is photographing their sunflower fields. This painting captures everything I love about a beautiful October day in Oregon with blue skies and a crisp coolness in the air. NOTE: "Azure Blooms" will be on display at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas until May 18th, 2025. You may purchase this original painting now, and we will ship it to you at the end of May.

This October, I discovered a grove of sunflowers blooming in the Oregon countryside against a cobalt sky. The flower stalks stretched high over my head, and I felt completely enveloped by sun-lit hues of yellow, green, and blue. I took dozens of photos to use as reference later in my studio, and then, using impasto strokes of oil paint, I laid my paint strokes side by side without layering, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas. The result captures the spirit of a late summer day in the northwest.

Inspired by van Gogh's love for sunflowers and Monet's garden (he created his own water lily garden so he could paint in his own backyard), I planted my own sunflower field last spring. This is a painting of a sunflower bouquet gathered from my field. I searched for heirloom seeds that would grow the large-headed sunflowers that make such great paintings. I draped an orange cloth behind the sunflowers for a moody, impressionistic look. My brush strokes are laid down in thick, expressive strokes, and I used a limited palette of only five oil paint colors.

Exploring southern France, I was inspired by the high plateaus in Provence, which are covered in endless lavender fields. Tucked among the lavender fields, I discovered this field of sunflowers right as the sun came up over the mountains. The rich, saturated colors of early morning are captured in this oil painting, while thick, lavish brush strokes bring to life the beauty of the sunflowers.

I discovered this sunflower field nestled among the rolling hills of lavender flowers in Valensole, France (in Provence). The sun was just peeking over the horizon, drenching the landscape in saturated hues of reddish-gold. When I paint, I place my brush strokes side by side without layering, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas.

In this painting, I wanted to make the yellow sunflower blooms glow by contrast against a green backdrop. I used a limited palette of only five colors, pre-mixing a wide range of hues before I picked up my brush to paint. I then painted swiftly, creating a sense of movement within the piece by the texture of my brushwork. I tried not to go over the same point on the canvas more than once, getting each stroke "right the first time," without blending or layering.

Inspired by the French impressionists and post-impressionists, I followed in their footsteps and explored the landscapes they painted within France and the Provence countryside. This painting captures a field of sunflowers growing on a high plateau in Provenence, near Saint Remy de Provence, where van Gogh lived. This year I grew my own sunflower garden, and I tested out a dozen different varieties of heirloom blooms. This is my first painting of the sunflower harvest this year. Sunflowers come in many different varieties. This year I am planting a dozen different varieties in my garden so I can paint them later this year. I love the central heads of these sunflowers: bright green, surrounded by a dark orange-red circle (the head of a sunflower is actually composed of tightly packed flowers called disk florets.) Sunflowers are a lot of fun to paint -- their long, curving petals catch the light in interesting patterns, and the bright yellow and gold hues are a beautiful contrast to a blue sky or a bed of rich green leaves. This is a special piece I created for <i>The Orange Show</i>, in the spirit of making the orange/yellow colors pop by creating a background entirely of blue and purple. The sunflowers are captured here in vivid shades that come alive on the canvas, the brush strokes thick and impressionistic. When I was ten years old, one of my favorite things to paint in oils was the roses and other flowers from my mother's garden, and it was great to re-visit the floral still life concept.
