Ruby Beach was my favorite part of Olympic National Park in Washington state. The dramatic rock stacks created some of the most interesting coastline I've ever painted. I loved how the entire landscape became bathed in rich hues of orange and purple as the sun sank to the horizon.

There is one grove of cypress trees near Carmel that is the most beautiful grove of cypress trees in the whole Monterey Peninsula. I visit them every time I go to Monterey. I must have painted them a dozen times already, but I love capturing their graceful branches in changing light and changing seasons. You may recognize these trees, if you find yourself driving on 17 Mile Drive.

There is one vista I love to paint at the southern edge of Carmel... there is a little bridge between the houses, and if I clamber down underneath the bridge, I can see a beautifully iconic rocky vista with Monterey cypress trees growing in overlapping layers. When there is a light mist in the air, the picture becomes moody and intriguing. This painting was inspired by my last trip to Carmel.

Washington's most visited national park, Olympic National Park, is captured for the first time in Erin Hanson's signature Open Impressionism style. Ruby Beach on the Olympic Peninsula was one of the highlights of my trip to Washington. I got there right at the peak of golden hour, and I watched the sky change into a rainbow of fiery hues. This petite painting captures the Washington coast vista in thick, impasto brushstrokes--a small, but epic, landscape captured on a 16" canvas. This painting is included in Erin's 2025 annual <a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/portfolio?col=the-petite-show-2025"><i>Petite Show</i></a>. This is the first painting I created after my recent inspirational trip to France to follow in the footsteps of the Impressionists. I started out in Paris, visiting many of the parks where the early impressionists and post-impressionists painted. Then I took a river boat along the Seine River, stopping in Giverny to see Monet's Garden and Rouen to see "Monet's" cathedral, and ending in Le Havre and Etretat. This painting of Etretat captures the stunning white limestone cliffs on the northern coast of Normandy, France. Monet was inspired to paint this same unique rock formation 140 years ago.

There is a little nook I like to photograph when I visit Carmel that has one of the best painting views, in my opinion. I have to scramble underneath a bridge, get snagged by a few blackberry bushes, and end up crouching precariously on the edge of steep cliff -- but the view of overlapping cypress trees and dramatic rock formations is totally worth it.

I visited Etretat on France's Normandy coast to explore the unique cliffs that Monet painted many times. Like Monet, I was inspired by the white limestone cliffs and the reflected colors of the cliffs, the water, and the sky. This is the second painting I have created from this location. Hiking along the trail at the top of the cliffs, I could see wildflowers growing against the turquoise waters below. The golden hour light in June lasted for hours... I loved seeing how the white limestone cliffs changed color until the sun finally set at 9:30 PM. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

Highway 1 has been an endless source of inspiration for me as a painter. I first started painting the crystal turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean about twelve years ago when I started exploring Paso Robles and the coastal region between Hearst Castle and Big Sur. I love painting swirling waves of white sea foam against aquamarine water. When orange poppies bloom along Highway 1, there is even more color to inspire me.

Looking southward from a high bluff in Mendocino County, I watch crashing waves and swirling turquoise waters as far as I can see. The rocky coastline of Northern California, dotted with sea stacks and steep cliffs, is a landscape painter's dream. I used a limited palette of five colors to capture the rich hues of this coastal scene. I try not to overlap my brush strokes when I paint, which gives my brush strokes a highly textured, painterly feel.

Etretat, France, was famously painted by Monet. In Monet's words, “Étretat is becoming more and more amazing….the beach with all its fine boats; it is superb, and I am enraged not to be more skillful in rendering all this. I would need two hands and hundreds of canvases.” Monet inspired me to visit Etretat this year, and I was likewise amazed by the brilliant colors, beautiful compositions, and abundant wildflowers. After exploring California's Highway 1 up and down countless times, I have picked out my favorite section of coastline -- just north of Point Sur (which is between Big Sur and Carmel.) This coastline has everything: expansive white sandy beaches, crystal aquamarine waters, and rocky outcroppings casting long blue shadows. It has everything I love about creating coastal paintings.
