Sunflowers come in many different varieties. This year I am planting a dozen different varieties in my garden so I can paint them later this year. I love the central heads of these sunflowers: bright green, surrounded by a dark orange-red circle (the head of a sunflower is actually composed of tightly packed flowers called disk florets.) Sunflowers are a lot of fun to paint -- their long, curving petals catch the light in interesting patterns, and the bright yellow and gold hues are a beautiful contrast to a blue sky or a bed of rich green leaves.
