Paintings with Purples

Purple has long been associated with royalty. "Tyrian purple" pigment came from a rare form of sea snail and became worth its weight in gold. It took two hundred and fifty thousand mollusks to create one ounce of the pigment. As ages passed, new ways were found to create the brilliant color and it eventually became more common and widely available. It was Gustav Klimt who famously layered purples and lavenders with 24kt gold leaf in his classic works.  Erin Hanson has employed purples with complimentary greens or earth tones to create many bold and stunning works.
