Paintings with Purples

Purple has long been associated with royalty. "Tyrian purple" pigment came from a rare form of sea snail and became worth its weight in gold. It took two hundred and fifty thousand mollusks to create one ounce of the pigment. As ages passed, new ways were found to create the brilliant color and it eventually became more common and widely available. It was Gustav Klimt who famously layered purples and lavenders with 24kt gold leaf in his classic works.  Erin Hanson has employed purples with complementary greens or earth tones to create many bold and stunning works.

The Grand Canyon is a painter's paradise... every morning and every sunset the canyon looks different. This painting was inspired by an early morning out at Hopi Point. As the clouds moved slowly overhead, the first rays of dawn shot through the cloud layer and illuminated the canyon below in an ever-changing dance of color and light. I used thick, expressive strokes of oil paint to capture the strength and majesty of the vista. There is one vista I love to paint at the southern edge of Carmel... there is a little bridge between the houses, and if I clamber down underneath the bridge, I can see a beautifully iconic rocky vista with Monterey cypress trees growing in overlapping layers. When there is a light mist in the air, the picture becomes moody and intriguing. This painting was inspired by my last trip to Carmel.

I spent two days exploring the lavender fields around Valensole, Provence. This region of France has steep-edged, high plateaus where lavender is grown. With dawn sunlight beginning at 5AM and lasting until 10PM, I had very long days to soak up the beautiful colors and changing light of French lavender fields. I also saw the occasional sunflower field, which was an added bonus!

Driving north along Highway 1 from Cambria, on the way to Hearst Castle, you see some of the most beautiful scenery along the Pacific Coast. I have always been drawn to the romantic shapes and multi-colored bark of the eucalyptus tree, and the way these trees were framed by the summer-colored hills beyond made me pull my van around and circle back so I could get some reference shots to paint.

Exploring the lavender fields on the high plateaus of Provence, France, was an experience I will never forget. I caught two sunsets and two sunrises among the lavender fields, and I have enough inspiration to last me a lifetime! After painting vineyards for so many years, it is fun to paint purple cultivated rows instead. The ground between the lavender plants is covered in warm-hued stones, adding additional texture and color contrast to the landscape. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

I love driving the winding roads through Paso Robles wine country. At the high elevations, I pass by sun-lit vineyards and open orchards, and when the roads dip down in the valleys, I pass beneath overhanging oak trees and hanging moss, and I can hear the sound of water trickling by in the nearby stream. This painting captures this view of Paso from between the oak trees, where crystalline light casts long shadows across the road.

The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. The lavender fields of Provence are everything I imagined they would be... endless rolling hills and fields covered in perfect rows of lavender. Since Valensole is high on a plateau, I felt strangely isolated in the high elevation, with my true horizon line hidden from me. The blue mountains in the distance are actually the peaks of the Swiss Alps, in the next country over!

There is a little nook I like to photograph when I visit Carmel that has one of the best painting views, in my opinion. I have to scramble underneath a bridge, get snagged by a few blackberry bushes, and end up crouching precariously on the edge of steep cliff -- but the view of overlapping cypress trees and dramatic rock formations is totally worth it.

The view of the Columbia River Gorge from Crown Point is one of the most beautiful views of Oregon that I have ever experienced. When I was there, I met a man from Portland who said he drove out every week to see the sunset from Crown Point. From the 180-degree sunset I experienced, I can see why!

Parc Monceau is the most beautiful park I visited while in Paris. Here, I understood why the impressionists painted predominantly in hues of blue and green. The lush gardens and quiet pond around the ancient-looking colonnade transported me back to a simpler time, a peaceful time, when spending a day in the gardens with one's friends was the ordinary thing to do. This painting captures that feeling of peace for me.

The view from the bridge in Zion, overlooking the river and the Watchman in the distance, is one of my favorite views to paint in Zion National Park. The turquoise waters seem to capture the very light from the darkening sky. I used thick, expressive brush strokes to capture the red rocks and mountains of Zion, laying my strokes side by side without overlapping. This painting was exhibited at <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West </i> solo museum exhibition at the Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah.
