Paintings of Zion National Park

The world-famous Zion National Park in Utah is home to some of the tallest sandstone cliffs in the world as well as incredible, ever-narrowing canyons carved over the centuries by the Virgin River. The landscapes are stunning and majestic, and it is without a doubt one of the favorite haunts of artist Erin Hanson. Hanson has returned to the park many times to paint its unique landscapes, and she has held two solo exhibitions in the area: one at the St. George Art Museum and one at the Zion Human History Museum.

This painting was inspired during a hike from Kolob Canyon to the East Entrance of Zion National Park. When hiking the West Rim Trail, the snow was coming down thickly, covering the desert floor with a fluffy white blanket. I love walking along the river bed in Zion Canyon. The view from the bridge in Zion, overlooking the river and the Watchman in the distance, is one of my favorite views to paint in Zion National Park. Inspired by a hike through southern Utah, this painting captures the low, overhanging branches of the gnarled cottonwoods. In early autumn, the cottonwoods had mostly dropped their leaves, and the red dirt path was covered in coin-shaped golden drops of color. The day had been drenched in rain, saturating all the colors and covering the canyon floor with a fresh bed of leaves. This painting was created over 24 karat gold leaf, applied directly to the canvas as an "underpainting." The thin sheets of genuine gold gleam with subtle light from between the brush strokes, catching the eye and making the painting seem to glow from within. On day five of a recent backpacking trip through Zion National Park, it snowed almost all day, the clouds occasionally parting to expose brilliant blue skies overhead. The last leg of the journey from Kolob Canyon to the East Gate involved steep, winding switchbacks that cut narrowly along the steep cliffs. The rocks were beautifully cut into stair shapes when the going got too steep. This painting captures that adventure and grandeur of the moment.
