Paintings with Greens

The Impressionists were well known for their use of complementary colors to bring depth to an object and create shadows in their paintings. This technique of placing complementary colored brush strokes side-by-side would imbue life to an object. They sought to capture not only the essence of what they were looking at but the general mood and atmosphere as well. Green, whether used to complement other colors or as the primary focus in a verdant landscape, is a principal hue in many of the works of Erin Hanson. Green can be used as a backdrop to make other colors pop -- like a brilliant sky peeking between branches or rows of cadmium yellow autumn vines interspersed with apple-green grass.

This painting was inspired by my annual trip to Schreiner's Iris Gardens in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The overlapping layers of multi-hued blooms remind me of Monet's flowering gardens. This little group of pale orange peonies caught my attention, and I just had to paint their open petals and exquisite colors.

I love to visit Schreider's iris garden in Oregon's Willamette Valley every year. The incredible variety of iris flowers is mind-boggling. For this painting, however, I wanted to compose a painting designed to set off the velvet-dark colors of a purple iris flower, contrasting against the pale viridian hues of the leaves.

This painting was inspired by the Woodburn Tulip Festival in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The sky was clear and blue, and you could see all the way to Mt. Hood in the distance. Bright, beautiful layers of color filled my senses everywhere I looked. I used thick, expressive brushstrokes of oil paint to capture the scene's vibrant vivacity. My style is called Open Impressionism. Using only five colors to create a limited palette (which prevents colors from getting muddy), I lay my strokes side by side, without layering. This keeps the brushstrokes fresh and alive, and very definitely a painting. When I visited France to visit the locales the impressionists had painted, I had to stop by Provence to see if the lavender fields there were as beautiful as I had heard. When I drove up onto the high and windy plateaus of Provence, with the Swiss Alps far in the distance, I was immediately captivated by the rolling plains of purple lavender rows. This painting captures the feeling of being in Provence, surrounded by beauty in every direction.

The first time I saw Mt Rainier, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the mountain. It reared high overhead, filling the senses. My trip to Norway last year has made me look at color and reflections in a whole new light. The deepening effects of the atmosphere as overlapping fjords receded into the distance was a source of endless inspiration for me. This painting captures a view of Geirangerfjord, one of Norway's most popular fjords. I returned to Sequim this year to photograph Washington’s lavender fields again, but foremost on my mind was finding a field of red poppies growing beside the lavender—a scene I had painted several times from photographs I’d taken a decade ago. When I returned to the same location, I discovered the poppies had been replaced by Shasta daisies. I did, however, find one small patch of red poppies still remaining, growing tenaciously beneath a white picket fence bordering the lavender field. I loved the way the red poppies contrasted with the white fence—and this painting was born.

I found the inspiration for this painting while driving through the Willamette Valley wine country, taking photos of vineyards at peak fall color. It had been a rainy, overcast day, but the clouds parted an hour before sundown, and I could see all the way to Mt. Hood. As the last rays of sunlight illuminated the landscape, Mt. Hood was colored pink and yellow against a darkening green sky.

The trail to the summit of Mt Rainier is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done. Lush grasses and abundant wildflowers blanket the landscape in greens and pops of color. The peak of Mt Rainier looms above, larger than I can possibly capture on a canvas, golden clouds of fog clinging to the sides of the mountain. I used thick brush strokes of oil paint laid side-by-side on the canvas to capture the strong shapes and texture of the mountain. Delicate blooms in lavender, white, and yellow set off the foreground.

After visiting Monet's garden in Giverny last summer, I traveled south in search of the original water lily gardens that first inspired Monet and supplied him with his water lily plants. The Latour-Mariac water lily farm was incredible--there were thousands of varieties and colors of water lilies--in fact, this is where the original non-white, cold-hardy water lilies were bred. The colorful pastel hues of the new varieties became hugely popular across Europe, and Monet played a large part in popularizing their delicate blooms. To me, this painting of Latour-Mariac water lilies encapsulates the history of the water lily image in impressionism. NOTE: "Seranade of Blooms" will be on display at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas until July 15th, 2025. I spent two days exploring the lavender fields around Valensole, Provence. This region of France has steep-edged, high plateaus where lavender is grown. With dawn sunlight beginning at 5AM and lasting until 10PM, I had very long days to soak up the beautiful colors and changing light of French lavender fields. I also saw the occasional sunflower field, which was an added bonus!

There is one vista I love to paint at the southern edge of Carmel... there is a little bridge between the houses, and if I clamber down underneath the bridge, I can see a beautifully iconic rocky vista with Monterey cypress trees growing in overlapping layers. The 2017 "super bloom" in southern California caused thousands of visitors to roam the desert and mountainsides, photographing the bright, abundant flowers. I visited France last year to follow in the footsteps of Monet and van Gogh. I spent a day in Vetheuil, a small town near Giverny, where Claude Monet lived and painted for a time. Everywhere I looked, I saw a painting before my eyes. I discovered this scene down a short trail down to the Seine river, where I saw a family of geese enjoying the early morning light. The landscape was filled with delicate hues of blue and green, and I was inspired to capture the magic of the scene with my brush.

When I visited Arles to see van Gogh's stomping grounds, I went to as many olive groves as I could. I found several very old groves -- one boasted several "centennial" trees over one hundred years old. I was inspired by their gnarled branches and unique coloring, just as van Gogh was. Here is a painting of an olive grove near Arles, in southern France.

This October, I discovered a grove of sunflowers blooming in the Oregon countryside against a cobalt sky. The flower stalks stretched high over my head, and I felt completely enveloped by sun-lit hues of yellow, green, and blue. I took dozens of photos to use as reference later in my studio, and then, using impasto strokes of oil paint, I laid my paint strokes side by side without layering, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas. The result captures the spirit of a late summer day in the northwest.
