Paintings with Blues

The first permanent blue pigment was created by the Egyptians in 2200 BC using the precious stone lapis lazuli. Due to its scarcity, they ultimately turned to chemistry and created pigment by heating limestone, sand, and copper. Blue continued in the tradition of art through the impressionists and post-impressionists, like in Vincent van Gogh's classic Starry Night. From soothing, cool blue to high-energy, electric blues, Erin Hanson utilizes the color in a myriad of backdrops, and subjects and often as a contrast to vibrant yellows and blazing oranges.

After visiting Monet's garden in Giverny last summer, I traveled south in search of the original water lily gardens that first inspired Monet and supplied him with his water lily plants. The Latour-Mariac water lily farm was incredible--there were thousands of varieties and colors of water lilies--in fact, this is where the original non-white, cold-hardy water lilies were bred. The colorful pastel hues of the new varieties became hugely popular across Europe, and Monet played a large part in popularizing their delicate blooms. To me, this painting of Latour-Mariac water lilies encapsulates the history of the water lily image in impressionism. NOTE: "Seranade of Blooms" will be on display at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas until May 18th, 2025. You may purchase this original painting now, and we will ship it to you at the end of May.

Haystack Rock is the most iconic sea stack formation on the Oregon coast, and seeing it at sunset brings it to light like no other time of day. Claude Monet's water lily garden is synonymous with "impressionism" for many art lovers. Monet's water lily pond continues to inspire large-scale impressionist paintings to the present day. One of the things I love about living in Oregon's Willamette Valley is visiting autumn harvest festivals. (We never had these in Southern California!) The harvest festival at Red Berry Barn has a hay ride, feeding zoo, giant slides, bouncy houses, pumpkin patch, and even a huge room full of corn kernels that you can bury yourself in (no joke.) But my favorite part of visiting Red Berry Barn every year is photographing their sunflower fields. This painting captures everything I love about a beautiful October day in Oregon with blue skies and a crisp coolness in the air. There is one grove of cypress trees near Carmel that is the most beautiful grove of cypress trees in the whole Monterey Peninsula. I visit them every time I go to Monterey. I must have painted them a dozen times already, but I love capturing their graceful branches in changing light and changing seasons. You may recognize these trees, if you find yourself driving on 17 Mile Drive.

I was driving down 17 Mile Drive in Carmel, on my way to photograph Lone Cypress at sunrise. The sky was lightening to a rich cobalt blue, and my headlights were illuminating the cypress trees in front of me. The Philosopher's Path in Kyoto, Japan, has the most beautiful color in the autumn when the maple trees turn color, but also in the spring, when the cherry trees burst into full bloom. I love driving the winding roads through Paso Robles wine country. At the high elevations, I pass by sun-lit vineyards and open orchards, and when the roads dip down in the valleys, I pass beneath overhanging oak trees and hanging moss, and I can hear the sound of water trickling by in the nearby stream. This painting captures this view of Paso from between the oak trees, where crystalline light casts long shadows across the road.

Delicate hues of burgundy, green, and blue meld together in this painting of a water lily pond in France. I stayed one night in an old stone bungalow near Bordeaux, and I woke the next morning before dawn to wander the gardens. Tucked away in a secluded grove of tangerine trees, I found a giant stone pond with water lilies blooming on the still water. The slowly lifting fog gave the vista a quiet, subdued tone, and I wandered through the quiet land, discovering unexpected marble statues, benches, and arbors, nibbling on fresh-picked plums and peaches as I went.

This petite work captures a beautiful sunrise seen from one of Montecito's beautiful beaches. Montecito (near Santa Barbara) has beautiful coastlines edged with dramatic boulders and elegant, long-leafed palm trees. Oregon's Willamette Valley has more irises in bloom in more color variations than I have ever seen anywhere else. My favorite place to hunt for irises to paint is at Schreiner's Iris Garden, where there are hundreds of varieties. But, sometimes, my favorite to paint is just the classic blue iris.

Exploring the French countryside one misty morning, while our riverboat was docked along the Seine, I saw field after field of pale blue flowers that seemed to glow under the cloudy dawn light. The tour guide explained these were fields of flax, which bloom for only one day. I feel very fortunate to have seen these beautiful flowers during the single day they were in bloom.

I visited Kyoto, Japan, this year to photograph the Sakura season--Japanese cherry trees in bloom. This painting captures the view from Philosopher's Path, a winding walkway of large stones that traverses the width of Kyoto. The path follows a water-filled canal, and cherry trees overhang the entire walkway. This painting captures the peaceful beauty of cherry trees at dusk.

I returned to Japan this year (after exploring their famous Japanese maple tree fall colors), this time to experience sakura -- the Japanese cherry blossom. This pink weeping cherry blooms after the abundant white cherry trees, and their delicate blooms are more rare and, therefore, more precious. I went to Yosemite last year to capture the beauty of the Sierra in a new light. The lavender fields of Provence are everything I imagined they would be... endless rolling hills and fields covered in perfect rows of lavender. Since Valensole is high on a plateau, I felt strangely isolated in the high elevation, with my true horizon line hidden from me. The blue mountains in the distance are actually the peaks of the Swiss Alps, in the next country over!

Highway 1 has been an endless source of inspiration for me as a painter. I first started painting the crystal turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean about twelve years ago when I started exploring Paso Robles and the coastal region between Hearst Castle and Big Sur. I love painting swirling waves of white sea foam against aquamarine water. When orange poppies bloom along Highway 1, there is even more color to inspire me.

I just returned from my second trip to Japan, this time to find inspiration among the blossoming cherry trees, known in Japan as "sakura." Japan's cherry blossom viewing is a centuries-old cultural tradition. During the few weeks of peak bloom, cherry flower festivals take place all across the country, with millions flocking to see the transient blooms. Often accompanied by picnics, parties, and saki, the viewing of cherry blossoms is called "hanami," which means "viewing flowers." This oil painting captures a dusk-blue sky behind the pale pink/white blooms of the Yoshino cherry tree. The brush strokes are loose and impressionistic, in my contemporary style of impressionism known as "Open Impressionism."

Cedar Breaks National Monument is a must-visit for anyone who loves aspen trees. This park is only a few hours from Zion National Park, and it is one of the best places to enjoy the quaking aspen's autumn show of color. Quiet pathways and hidden rivers and ponds are surrounded by the colorful trees, their coin-shaped leaves chattering and singing in the wind. Etretat, France, was famously painted by Monet. In Monet's words, “Étretat is becoming more and more amazing….the beach with all its fine boats; it is superb, and I am enraged not to be more skillful in rendering all this. After exploring California's Highway 1 up and down countless times, I have picked out my favorite section of coastline -- just north of Point Sur (which is between Big Sur and Carmel.) This coastline has everything: expansive white sandy beaches, crystal aquamarine waters, and rocky outcroppings casting long blue shadows. It has everything I love about creating coastal paintings.
