Paintings with Greens

The Impressionists were well known for their use of complementary colors to bring depth to an object and create shadows in their paintings. This technique of placing complementary colored brush strokes side-by-side would imbue life to an object. They sought to capture not only the essence of what they were looking at but the general mood and atmosphere as well. Green, whether used to complement other colors or as the primary focus in a verdant landscape, is a principal hue in many of the works of Erin Hanson. Green can be used as a backdrop to make other colors pop -- like a brilliant sky peeking between branches or rows of cadmium yellow autumn vines interspersed with apple-green grass.

There is one vista I love to paint at the southern edge of Carmel... there is a little bridge between the houses, and if I clamber down underneath the bridge, I can see a beautifully iconic rocky vista with Monterey cypress trees growing in overlapping layers. When there is a light mist in the air, the picture becomes moody and intriguing. This painting was inspired by my last trip to Carmel.

I spent two days exploring the lavender fields around Valensole, Provence. This region of France has steep-edged, high plateaus where lavender is grown. With dawn sunlight beginning at 5AM and lasting until 10PM, I had very long days to soak up the beautiful colors and changing light of French lavender fields. I also saw the occasional sunflower field, which was an added bonus!

Claude Monet's water lily garden is synonymous with "impressionism" for many art lovers. Monet's water lily pond continues to inspire large-scale impressionist paintings to the present day. This painting, "Lilies Dreaming," was created by Open Impressionist Erin Hanson, who is carrying forward the tradition of the impressionists with a modern-day twist. In her paintings, she does not overlap her brushstrokes of oil paint; instead, she places her strokes side by side, getting each stroke "right the first time" and allowing the natural texture and movement of the oil paint to express itself in her works.

After visiting Monet's garden in Giverny last summer, I traveled south in search of the original water lily gardens that first inspired Monet and supplied him with his water lily plants. The Latour-Mariac water lily farm was incredible--there were thousands of varieties and colors of water lilies--in fact, this is where the original non-white, cold-hardy water lilies were bred. The colorful pastel hues of the new varieties became hugely popular across Europe, and Monet played a large part in popularizing their delicate blooms. To me, this painting of Latour-Mariac water lilies encapsulates the history of the water lily image in impressionism. NOTE: "Seranade of Blooms" will be on display at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas until May 18th, 2025. You may purchase this original painting now, and we will ship it to you at the end of May.

This was my first attempt at painting an abstract pile of maple leaves. I loved creating patterns of color and contrast to keep the eye continually moving through the piece. This October, I discovered a grove of sunflowers blooming in the Oregon countryside against a cobalt sky. The flower stalks stretched high over my head, and I felt completely enveloped by sun-lit hues of yellow, green, and blue. I took dozens of photos to use as reference later in my studio, and then, using impasto strokes of oil paint, I laid my paint strokes side by side without layering, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas. The result captures the spirit of a late summer day in the northwest.

I visited France last year to follow in the footsteps of Monet and van Gogh. I spent a day in Vetheuil, a small town near Giverny, where Claude Monet lived and painted for a time. Everywhere I looked, I saw a painting before my eyes. I discovered this scene down a short trail down to the Seine river, where I saw a family of geese enjoying the early morning light. The landscape was filled with delicate hues of blue and green, and I was inspired to capture the magic of the scene with my brush.

When I visited Arles to see van Gogh's stomping grounds, I went to as many olive groves as I could. I found several very old groves -- one boasted several "centennial" trees over one hundred years old. I was inspired by their gnarled branches and unique coloring, just as van Gogh was. I went to Kyoto, Japan, to photograph the cherry blossoms this spring, and I saw many Japanese maple trees with brand new, bright green leaves just beginning to emerge. The miniature, star-shaped leaves were like a delicate veil of filigree overhead, held up by graceful branches. Every time I paint a water lily pond, I am inspired by something new. In this piece, I wanted to capture the warm reflections of light coming down from the top of the pond. When I visited one of the famous parks in Osaka, Japan, hundreds of cherry trees were in bloom. The ancient trees were gnarled and beautiful, with their textured boughs darkened by the recent rainfall. The pale pink and white cherry blossoms lit up the sky, with a pale blue sky peeking out between the blooms.

I visited Etretat on France's Normandy coast to explore the unique cliffs that Monet painted many times. Like Monet, I was inspired by the white limestone cliffs and the reflected colors of the cliffs, the water, and the sky. This is the second painting I have created from this location. Hiking along the trail at the top of the cliffs, I could see wildflowers growing against the turquoise waters below. The golden hour light in June lasted for hours... I loved seeing how the white limestone cliffs changed color until the sun finally set at 9:30 PM. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

In this painting, I wanted to make the yellow sunflower blooms glow by contrast against a green backdrop. I used a limited palette of only five colors, pre-mixing a wide range of hues before I picked up my brush to paint. I then painted swiftly, creating a sense of movement within the piece by the texture of my brushwork. I tried not to go over the same point on the canvas more than once, getting each stroke "right the first time," without blending or layering.

Parc Monceau is the most beautiful park I visited while in Paris. Here, I understood why the impressionists painted predominantly in hues of blue and green. The lush gardens and quiet pond around the ancient-looking colonnade transported me back to a simpler time, a peaceful time, when spending a day in the gardens with one's friends was the ordinary thing to do. This painting captures that feeling of peace for me.
