The first time I saw Mt Rainier, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the mountain. It reared high overhead, filling the senses. This painting captures the beauty of Rainier behind the ancient and winter-swept noble firs that grow at the base of the peak. Thick brush strokes of oil paint laid side by side communicate the majesty of the mountain. Valley of Fire State Park is one of my original stomping grounds when I was a rock climber living in Las Vegas and just starting out as a professional painter. I was drawn to the bold colors and strong compositional elements in the red rocks, and my favorite rock formation to paint is called the "Seven Sisters." This painting captures the striking play of light and shadow during the golden hour of dawn.

I think my favorite view of the Grand Canyon is from Hopi Point on the South Rim. From here, you are more isolated from the crowds, especially at dawn. You can see all the way down to the turquoise waters of the Colorado River. Since Hopi Point is on a protrusion out into the canyon, it feels like you are surrounded by almost 360 degrees of stunning canyon. As the sun slowly clears the horizon, the colors and shadows quickly change during Arizona's desert golden hour light.

Joshua Tree National Park is most beautiful at sunrise and sundown, when the white granite boulders begin to glow with warm hues of apricot and buttercream, while the shadows turn shades of plum and eggplant (I must be hungry.) I have been to Joshua Tree many times since I was a child, hiking, camping, rock climbing, exploring... and when the boulders start to change color, I just have to stop, enamored with the color all around me, and thank God I am a painter! Ruby Beach was my favorite part of Olympic National Park in Washington state. The dramatic rock stacks created some of the most interesting coastline I've ever painted. I loved how the entire landscape became bathed in rich hues of orange and purple as the sun sank to the horizon.

The trail to the summit of Mt Rainier is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done. Lush grasses and abundant wildflowers blanket the landscape in greens and pops of color. The peak of Mt Rainier looms above, larger than I can possibly capture on a canvas, golden clouds of fog clinging to the sides of the mountain. I used thick brush strokes of oil paint laid side-by-side on the canvas to capture the strong shapes and texture of the mountain. Delicate blooms in lavender, white, and yellow set off the foreground.

This painting was inspired during a hike from Kolob Canyon to the East Entrance of Zion National Park. When hiking the West Rim Trail, the snow was coming down thickly, covering the desert floor with a fluffy white blanket. The last time I visited the Four Corners region of the Colorado Plateau was several years ago. The big, beautiful blue sky was full of white fluffy clouds--the perfect high desert weather. I took photos of Monument Valley from a few miles away, watching the clouds pass shadows over the red rock buttes below. I printed this photo when I returned from my trip, and I have been wanting to paint it ever since. When I paint, I try to recapture what it felt like to actually stand there, my feet sinking into the warm, soft red sand, a breeze ruffling my hair, squinting into the sky, and feeling surrounded by beautiful color 360 degrees around me.

I stayed at Paradise Inn at the base of Mt. Rainier to get inspiration from the majestic peak. In this painting, I captured the beautiful Noble Firs that grow at the base of Mt. Watching the first morning light hit Mt Rainier from Tipsoo Lake made me appreciate the beauty of the Cascades in a whole new light. The Grand Canyon is a painter's paradise... every morning and every sunset the canyon looks different. This painting was inspired by an early morning out at Hopi Point.
