Some of the most striking imagery I saw on my Washington photo safari was these Shasta daisies growing in front of a lavender farm, right on the northernmost coast of Washington. The abundance of white blooms was so striking, I just had to paint it as soon as I returned home to my studio.

Inspired by a 5-day backpacking trip across Zion National Park, this painting captures the lively color and natural beauty of southern Utah in November. This was my first attempt at painting an abstract pile of maple leaves. I loved creating patterns of color and contrast to keep the eye continually moving through the piece. The dark shadows of the green leaves make the lighter golden leaves pop with life and vivacity. Thickly applied strokes of oil paint add dimension to the leaves.

Exploring the French countryside one misty morning, while our riverboat was docked along the Seine, I saw field after field of pale blue flowers that seemed to glow under the cloudy dawn light. The tour guide explained these were fields of flax, which bloom for only one day. I feel very fortunate to have seen these beautiful flowers during the single day they were in bloom.

I went to Kyoto, Japan, to photograph the cherry blossoms this spring, and I saw many Japanese maple trees with brand new, bright green leaves just beginning to emerge. The miniature, star-shaped leaves were like a delicate veil of filigree overhead, held up by graceful branches. This abstract impressionist painting captures the beauty of the Japanese maple tree in the springtime.

Every time I see a sunrise or sunset at Joshua Tree, the colorless desert landscape turns into a rainbow wash of color. No golden hour is ever the same--I am always surprised and inspired by the colors I see. Cannon Beach is one of those places you can visit again and again -- like Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. Both destinations have some of my favorite rock formations to paint, too -- Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, and Lone Cypress in Carmel. The ancient tradition of cherry blossom viewing is woven into the tapestry of modern Japan, and the whole country seems to take pause and revel in the beautiful but transient flowers. The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."

When I visited one of the famous parks in Osaka, Japan, hundreds of cherry trees were in bloom. The ancient trees were gnarled and beautiful, with their textured boughs darkened by the recent rainfall. The pale pink and white cherry blossoms lit up the sky, with a pale blue sky peeking out between the blooms.

The lavender fields of Provence are everything I imagined they would be... endless rolling hills and fields covered in perfect rows of lavender. Since Valensole is high on a plateau, I felt strangely isolated in the high elevation, with my true horizon line hidden from me. The blue mountains in the distance are actually the peaks of the Swiss Alps, in the next country over!

There is a little nook I like to photograph when I visit Carmel that has one of the best painting views, in my opinion. I have to scramble underneath a bridge, get snagged by a few blackberry bushes, and end up crouching precariously on the edge of steep cliff -- but the view of overlapping cypress trees and dramatic rock formations is totally worth it.

Driving through Arizona, I can't help but be inspired to paint. The golden hour in Arizona is most dramatic when there are moody clouds overhead. I love it when the last rays of sunlight streak sideways through the parting clouds, illuminating the landscape in unexpected ways.

I visited San Miguel de Allende in Mexico this summer. I loved the colors in this town--rich, royal hues of blue, marigold, and coral. This purple and orange bougainvillea caught my eye; the orange blooms against the adobe wall were striking. This painting captures the scene with impasto strokes of oil paint in my Open Impressionism style. This painting is included in Erin's 2025 annual <a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/portfolio?col=the-petite-show-2025"><i>Petite Show</i></a>. The exhibition will be on display at The Erin Hanson Gallery in McMinnville, Oregon, for one day only, Saturday, November 8th. A tall grove of cypress trees caught my attention while driving south along the Pacific Coast. The morning light cast golden hues across the sandstone cliffs, a beautiful contrast to the ocean blues. The view of the Columbia River Gorge from Crown Point is one of the most beautiful views of Oregon that I have ever experienced. When I was there, I met a man from Portland who said he drove out every week to see the sunset from Crown Point. From the 180-degree sunset I experienced, I can see why!

La Quinta, in the high desert of California, is beautiful in the springtime, when desert wildflowers and cultivated blooms both are in full color. In this painting, I wanted to make the yellow sunflower blooms glow by contrast against a green backdrop. I used a limited palette of only five colors, pre-mixing a wide range of hues before I picked up my brush to paint. I then painted swiftly, creating a sense of movement within the piece by the texture of my brushwork. I tried not to go over the same point on the canvas more than once, getting each stroke "right the first time," without blending or layering.

The golden hour in Provence, France, is worth waking up at 5 AM to see. The high plateaus became saturated in glowing orange light, and when I saw this field of sunflowers, I spent the entire golden hour walking among the sunflower stalks and taking hundreds of reference photos. This painting captures the magical light from that morning.
