Paintings of the Southwest

The southwest was Erin Hanson's first love; she began painting in her Open Impressionism style when rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon and living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her Southwest Collection includes vivid orange rock formations and purple shadows inspired by Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. She has spent many years exploring the national parks and monuments across Arizona and the Colorado Plateau, including Sedona, Saguaro National Park, Canyon de Chelly, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Arches, Bryce, and Zion (to name a few!)

Valley of Fire State Park is one of my original stomping grounds when I was a rock climber living in Las Vegas and just starting out as a professional painter. I was drawn to the bold colors and strong compositional elements in the red rocks, and my favorite rock formation to paint is called the "Seven Sisters." This painting captures the striking play of light and shadow during the golden hour of dawn.

I think my favorite view of the Grand Canyon is from Hopi Point on the South Rim. From here, you are more isolated from the crowds, especially at dawn. You can see all the way down to the turquoise waters of the Colorado River. Since Hopi Point is on a protrusion out into the canyon, it feels like you are surrounded by almost 360 degrees of stunning canyon. As the sun slowly clears the horizon, the colors and shadows quickly change during Arizona's desert golden hour light.

Saguaro National Park is one of my favorite places to visit in Arizona. The towering cacti, blooming scrub, and ocotillo are so beautiful in the early morning light. This painting captures my love for the desert with thick, impressionistic brushstrokes of oil paint that create a mosaic of texture and light across the canvas. In my Open Impressionist technique, I try not to overlap my brushstrokes, which keeps my paintings fresh and painterly.

Hiking through Canyon de Chelly is a much more personal experience than in the Grand Canyon. Often, I am all alone, surrounded by steep canyon cliffs on all sides. Every turn in the trail opens up a new vista of running water, green cottonwood trees, and pink sandstone. If you are lucky, you can see ancient carvings and homes carved into the side of the cliffs.

The last time I visited the Four Corners region of the Colorado Plateau was several years ago. The big, beautiful blue sky was full of white fluffy clouds--the perfect high desert weather. I took photos of Monument Valley from a few miles away, watching the clouds pass shadows over the red rock buttes below. I printed this photo when I returned from my trip, and I have been wanting to paint it ever since. When I paint, I try to recapture what it felt like to actually stand there, my feet sinking into the warm, soft red sand, a breeze ruffling my hair, squinting into the sky, and feeling surrounded by beautiful color 360 degrees around me.

The Grand Canyon is a painter's paradise... every morning and every sunset the canyon looks different. This painting was inspired by an early morning out at Hopi Point. As the clouds moved slowly overhead, the first rays of dawn shot through the cloud layer and illuminated the canyon below in an ever-changing dance of color and light. I used thick, expressive strokes of oil paint to capture the strength and majesty of the vista. I was giving a speech before doing a live demonstration in Scottsdale, and I was explaining to the audience how I select specific items from the landscape to focus on, in order to give a cohesive message and composition in my painting -- when I had the perfect idea of what I should paint for them the following day: I painted the palo verdes trees that were right outside the Spirit of the West museum in Scottsdale. Here is the completed painting. I demonstrated how I used complementary colors to make the greens of the palos verdes pop and come alive, and how I used motion within the composition to keep the eyes moving throughout the painting. Every choice made during painting, such as which trees to focus on, the colors, the position of the trees -- everything revolved around the central idea "look how green those trees are!"
