I love walking along the river bed in Zion Canyon. Red rock cliffs reach high into the sky around me, and all around me is silent except for the moving sound of water and the wind rustling through the cottonwood leaves. I walk in and out of shadow beneath the overhanging boughs, my mind completely at peace. This painting captures all my love for this landscape.

When you first enter Arches National Park, one of my favorite vistas to paint is immediately to your left-hand side. You can see beautiful fins of red rock sandstone overlapping into the far distance. It is most beautiful at dawn. This painting captures the scene with luscious colors of pink and orange.

The clean, abstract rock formations make great painting compositions, and the buttery colors of sandstone rock allow me to use the full range of my palette from creamy yellow to butternut orange to vivid purple. The view from the bridge in Zion, overlooking the river and the Watchman in the distance, is one of my favorite views to paint in Zion National Park. The turquoise waters seem to capture the very light from the darkening sky. I used thick, expressive brush strokes to capture the red rocks and mountains of Zion, laying my strokes side by side without overlapping.

"Crack in the Rock" was one of the first paintings Erin Hanson ever painted in the style of Open Impressionism, painted while she was developing her style and rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Her style of painting in distinct brushstrokes separated in mosaic-like shapes was developed in her attempt to capture the planes and dark cracks in the rock faces she loved to climb.

Erin's iconic style "Open Impressionism" is now taught in art schools worldwide, and her pieces hang in the permanent collections of many museums in the United States. This rare painting was made available for us to sell on consignment.

This painting captures Red Rock Canyon with an abstracted style. "Crack in the Rock" is a sport climb (meaning the route had bolts in it) in Red Rock. The painting was done on 3/4" stretched canvas, and the piece arrives framed in a new 3.5"-wide black and gold plein air frame.

Capturing the impressively grand features of Yosemite on an 11-inch-tall canvas is a challenge that requires planning and a confident hand. I pre-mix my entire palette of colors before I begin painting, with my palette organized in sections of shadow and light across the canvas. When I paint, I try not to overlap my brushstrokes, which keeps the texture and movement of the painting alive and fresh.

Joshua Tree National Park is most beautiful at sunrise and sundown, when the white granite boulders begin to glow with warm hues of apricot and buttercream, while the shadows turn shades of plum and eggplant (I must be hungry.) I have been to Joshua Tree many times since I was a child, hiking, camping, rock climbing, exploring... and when the boulders start change color, I just have to stop, enamored with the color all around me, and thank God I am a painter!

Monument Valley
<B>F U N F A C T S</B>

Formed during the Permian period (50 million years before dinosaurs roamed the earth), this patch of land once formed part of a seafloor where sediments and sandstone piled up in layers for millions of years. The Valley is now a sacred place for the Navajo, whose mythology holds that these grand spires contain the spirits of Najavo warriors. Monument Valley is found on the Navajo National Reservation.

The Valley is also one of the most filmed spots in the history of filmmaking. The valley was hailed "John Wayne country" for appearing in no less than five of his movies. It also served as a backdrop for an iconic scene in Forest Gump.

"There are certain places in the world that seem like special effects, they don't seem real," said film historian Scott Eyman. "They're too perfect. And the first time you come here, you see it through John Ford's eyes." (Ford is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential film-makers in history.)
