Home to a rugged coastline, vast deserts, farmland, and a portion of the Pacific Temperate Rainforest, Oregon's landscapes are varied and beautiful. Erin Hanson has painted many aspects of Oregon's natural areas, from famous spots like Haystack Rock, Smith Rock, and the Cascade Range to local vineyards, tulip farms, and the maples in her own backyard. Inspired by impressionist landscape artists from the northern Americas like Tom Thomson, Hanson takes on the wilds of Oregon with brush and canvas in this collection of Oregon-inspired landscape paintings.

Every spring for the past five years, I have driven past a group of the largest red poppies I have ever seen, in an unassuming yard in McMinnville, Oregon. This year, I finally stopped and photographed them during the perfect golden-hour light. When I spoke to the homeowner, he told me he had planted these poppies over 50 years ago! Each year, they grew larger and larger, with blooms now as large as two of my hands held together. I knew I had to capture these scarlet poppies on a canvas large enough to convey the emotional impact they had on me.

This painting was inspired by my annual trip to Schreiner's Iris Gardens in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The overlapping layers of multi-hued blooms remind me of Monet's flowering gardens. This little group of pale orange peonies caught my attention, and I just had to paint their open petals and exquisite colors.

I love to visit Schreider's iris garden in Oregon's Willamette Valley every year. The incredible variety of iris flowers is mind-boggling. For this painting, however, I wanted to compose a painting designed to set off the velvet-dark colors of a purple iris flower, contrasting against the pale viridian hues of the leaves.

This painting was inspired by the Woodburn Tulip Festival in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The sky was clear and blue, and you could see all the way to Mt. Hood in the distance. Bright, beautiful layers of color filled my senses everywhere I looked. I used thick, expressive brushstrokes of oil paint to capture the scene's vibrant vivacity. My style is called Open Impressionism. Using only five colors to create a limited palette (which prevents colors from getting muddy), I lay my strokes side by side, without layering. This keeps the brushstrokes fresh and alive, and very definitely a painting. I was out for a walk last week, breathing in the cold, crisp air of January in Oregon, and I saw this beautiful maple tree with a few leaves still clinging to the branches. The dark red leaves looked so playful and bright against the winter blue sky. This painting captures everything I love about this time of year. I found the inspiration for this painting while driving through the Willamette Valley wine country, taking photos of vineyards at peak fall color. It had been a rainy, overcast day, but the clouds parted an hour before sundown, and I could see all the way to Mt. Hood. As the last rays of sunlight illuminated the landscape, Mt. Hood was colored pink and yellow against a darkening green sky.

I used to drive by this hazelnut farm every day on my way to my gallery. The light in winter is so special--a limited palette of blues and golds can be used to paint an entire landscape. One of the things I love about living in Oregon's Willamette Valley is visiting autumn harvest festivals. (We never had these in Southern California!) The harvest festival at Red Berry Barn has a hay ride, feeding zoo, giant slides, bouncy houses, pumpkin patch, and even a huge room full of corn kernels that you can bury yourself in (no joke.) But my favorite part of visiting Red Berry Barn every year is photographing their sunflower fields. This painting captures everything I love about a beautiful October day in Oregon with blue skies and a crisp coolness in the air. I painted this view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley (also known as the "Fruit Loop" because of all the fruit orchards). The sunflowers were in late bloom, and the first light of morning cast a ruddy glow on the snow-dappled peak of Mount Hood. This October, I discovered a grove of sunflowers blooming in the Oregon countryside against a cobalt sky. The flower stalks stretched high over my head, and I felt completely enveloped by sun-lit hues of yellow, green, and blue. I took dozens of photos to use as reference later in my studio, and then, using impasto strokes of oil paint, I laid my paint strokes side by side without layering, creating a mosaic of color and texture across the canvas. The result captures the spirit of a late summer day in the northwest.

Cannon Beach is one of those places you can visit again and again -- like Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. Both destinations have some of my favorite rock formations to paint, too -- Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, and Lone Cypress in Carmel. This painting has a beautiful simplicity and movement that gives me the same feeling of peace as when I viewed the landscape in person.

The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."

The view of the Columbia River Gorge from Crown Point is one of the most beautiful views of Oregon that I have ever experienced. When I was there, I met a man from Portland who said he drove out every week to see the sunset from Crown Point. From the 180-degree sunset I experienced, I can see why!

This was my first attempt at painting an abstract pile of maple leaves. I loved creating patterns of color and contrast to keep the eye continually moving through the piece.
