Paintings of Water Lilies

Many of us have beheld at least one of the two hundred and fifty paintings of water lilies by French Impressionist Claude Monet. The impressions captured in his home garden throughout the last thirty years of his life are remarkable and classic. Erin Hanson has also found inspiration in this unique flower that rests peacefully in quiet ponds. The shifting reflections in the water create endless patterns and rhythms of color around the floating lily pads.

Monet's water lily garden in Giverny is an ever-changing and ever-renewing source of inspiration for me. In this painting, I wanted to capture the feeling of water lilies floating on the surface of a still pond, filled with reflections of the clouds. I applied thick brushstrokes of oil paint laid side by side without layering to capture the sense of movement and texture in the scene.

After visiting Monet's garden in Giverny last summer, I traveled south in search of the original water lily gardens that first inspired Monet and supplied him with his water lily plants. The Latour-Mariac water lily farm was incredible--there were thousands of varieties and colors of water lilies--in fact, this is where the original non-white, cold-hardy water lilies were bred. The colorful pastel hues of the new varieties became hugely popular across Europe, and Monet played a large part in popularizing their delicate blooms. To me, this painting of Latour-Mariac water lilies encapsulates the history of the water lily image in impressionism. NOTE: "Seranade of Blooms" will be on display at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas until July 15th, 2025. After immersing myself in the beauty of Monet's Garden and seeing his original water lily paintings in several different art museums in France, I was inspired to create my own large-scale oil painting of water lilies. After seeing his garden in person, I realized that the squiggly lines in his pieces were reflections of weeping willow trees. This made me look at water reflections in a whole new light.

Delicate hues of burgundy, green, and blue meld together in this painting of a water lily pond in France. I stayed one night in an old stone bungalow near Bordeaux, and I woke the next morning before dawn to wander the gardens. Tucked away in a secluded grove of tangerine trees, I found a giant stone pond with water lilies blooming on the still water. The slowly lifting fog gave the vista a quiet, subdued tone, and I wandered through the quiet land, discovering unexpected marble statues, benches, and arbors, nibbling on fresh-picked plums and peaches as I went.

I am always searching for new water lily ponds to paint. Two of my favorite ponds are in the middle of a big city, and both at an art museum -- the lily pond in Pasadena, California, at the Norton Simon Museum and the lily pond in Balboa Park, in front of the San Diego Museum of Art (which I have painted here.) I love how the light and reflections interact with the lily pads, and the blooming flowers add an extra dimension of color and texture. "Illumination" is an original oil painting on stretched canvas. I created this painting during a live painting demonstration on a cruise boat floating along the Seine River, near Giverny, France. Sounds unreal, doesn't it? While I painted, we drifted past ancient castles mounted atop limestone cliffs, quaint thatched-roof towns with Gothic temples towering high above, and little families of swans swimming down the river alongside us. This painting captures the water lilies in Monet's Garden.
