Paintings of Water Lilies

Many of us have beheld at least one of the two hundred and fifty paintings of water lilies by French Impressionist Claude Monet. The impressions captured in his home garden throughout the last thirty years of his life are remarkable and classic. Erin Hanson has also found inspiration in this unique flower that rests peacefully in quiet ponds. The shifting reflections in the water create endless patterns and rhythms of color around the floating lily pads.

I am always searching for new water lily ponds to paint. Two of my favorite ponds are in the middle of a big city, and both at an art museum -- the lily pond in Pasadena, California, at the Norton Simon Museum and the lily pond in Balboa Park, in front of the San Diego Museum of Art (which I have painted here.) I love how the light and reflections interact with the lily pads, and the blooming flowers add an extra dimension of color and texture. "Illumination" is an original oil painting on stretched canvas.
