This painting of Yosemite valley captures the colors of sunset against the striking blue of the mountain cliffs. The brush strokes are laid side by side, without layering, in Hanson's unique Open Impressionism style. The vivid colors are created from a limited palette of only five colors. This painting was exhibited at <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West </i> solo museum exhibition at the Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah.

I went to Yosemite last year to capture the beauty of the Sierra in a new light. When I arrived, the rangers were using fire to clear out the underbrush, and the valley was filled with smoke for days. When I paint, I try not to overlap my brushstrokes, which keeps the texture and movement of the painting alive and fresh. This painting was inspired by a November, snow-dusted backpacking trip in the eastern Sierras. As the last rays of sun closed over the landscape, the wintered birch trees turned the color of crystal flame. We camped that night between the pines and granite boulders on the canyon floor. This original oil painting was created over an application of 24 karat gold leaf. The genuine gold glints through the layers of oil paint, catching the light in a subtle and surprising manner, and bringing the oil painting to life like never before. The painting was created on 3/4" canvas and comes framed in a gilded, 5"-deep, museum-quality frame. Erin finally re-visited the Sierras after 10 years, and found the ragged mountains, winter colors, and long shadows an endless source of inspiration! These first two paintings were inspired by backpacking across Kearsarge Pass, near Lone Pine. This painting, which includes the rare man-made object, captures the epitome of relief after days of hiking: the trail's end parking lot with the ubiquitous wooden outhouse.
