Paintings of Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon in Utah is known for brilliantly colored geological formations called hoodoos, and Erin Hanson uses her open impressionist painting technique to great effect here. After watching dawn break over Bryce Canyon, I began hiking down the steep trail into the canyon’s depths. It had snowed a few days earlier, and the white strips of snow stood out in stark contrast against the deep orange and red sandstone. This painting captures all the charm of red rock country in winter. This painting was done on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edge of the canvas. This piece has been framed in a gold, hand-carved open impressionist frame.

After the first snowfall of November, Bryce Canyon looked spectacular in the early morning dawn. The sunlight quickly spread down the canyon walls and the day began to defrost after the sub-freezing early dawn. The day was spent hiking 14 miles through Bryce Canyon, exploring the twists and turns of the trails and the beautiful autumn vistas. The artist took a special trip to Bryce Canyon in November, especially to see the red hoodoos against fresh snowfall. The 14-mile hike through the canyon has been inspiring a new series of paintings of reflected light and beautiful patterns of blue shadows in the snow.
