Discover Erin Hanson's northwest landscapes, inspired by Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. From the rich colors of Willamette Valley wine country to the granite peaks of Glacier National Park, these paintings capture the vibrant beauty of the northwest. The northwest is also home to a wealth of flower fields, from Sequim's famous lavender fields to the tulip festival in Woodburn. There are sunflowers, daffodils, and irises galore, and Erin has been eagerly collecting material to paint every spring. Now that Erin herself resides in the northwest, she is daily inspired by the changing seasons, wide-open countryside, big skies, bold color, and beautiful trees.

This painting was inspired by my annual trip to Schreiner's Iris Gardens in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The overlapping layers of multi-hued blooms remind me of Monet's flowering gardens. This little group of pale orange peonies caught my attention, and I just had to paint their open petals and exquisite colors.

I love to visit Schreider's iris garden in Oregon's Willamette Valley every year. The incredible variety of iris flowers is mind-boggling. For this painting, however, I wanted to compose a painting designed to set off the velvet-dark colors of a purple iris flower, contrasting against the pale viridian hues of the leaves.

I was out for a walk last week, breathing in the cold, crisp air of January in Oregon, and I saw this beautiful maple tree with a few leaves still clinging to the branches. The first time I saw Mt Rainier, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the mountain. It reared high overhead, filling the senses. I returned to Sequim this year to photograph Washington’s lavender fields again, but foremost on my mind was finding a field of red poppies growing beside the lavender—a scene I had painted several times from photographs I’d taken a decade ago. When I returned to the same location, I discovered the poppies had been replaced by Shasta daisies. I did, however, find one small patch of red poppies still remaining, growing tenaciously beneath a white picket fence bordering the lavender field. I loved the way the red poppies contrasted with the white fence—and this painting was born.

I found the inspiration for this painting while driving through the Willamette Valley wine country, taking photos of vineyards at peak fall color. It had been a rainy, overcast day, but the clouds parted an hour before sundown, and I could see all the way to Mt. Hood. As the last rays of sunlight illuminated the landscape, Mt. Hood was colored pink and yellow against a darkening green sky.

Ruby Beach was my favorite part of Olympic National Park in Washington state. The dramatic rock stacks created some of the most interesting coastline I've ever painted. I loved how the entire landscape became bathed in rich hues of orange and purple as the sun sank to the horizon.

I used to drive by this hazelnut farm every day on my way to my gallery. The light in winter is so special--a limited palette of blues and golds can be used to paint an entire landscape. I returned to Washington this year on photo safari, and one of my goals for the trip was to find this one meadow of red poppies that I had seen ten years ago growing next to a field of lavender in Sequim. I returned to the same location, but unfortunately, the field of poppies had been replaced by Shasta daisies (which I ended up painting anyway)... but as I was walking around the landscape between the lavender fields, I discovered this one tiny patch of red poppies still remaining from all those years ago, tucked away underneath a white fence. I took dozens of photos of this tiny patch of poppies, and this is the first painting I created of that memory.

The trail to the summit of Mt Rainier is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done. Lush grasses and abundant wildflowers blanket the landscape in greens and pops of color. The peak of Mt Rainier looms above, larger than I can possibly capture on a canvas, golden clouds of fog clinging to the sides of the mountain. I used thick brush strokes of oil paint laid side-by-side on the canvas to capture the strong shapes and texture of the mountain. Delicate blooms in lavender, white, and yellow set off the foreground.

This painting was inspired by the first golden hour I experienced on my photo safari through Washington state this year. I traveled through Sequim, the Olympic Peninsula, Mt Rainier, and the San Juan Islands, but the first scene I wanted to paint was this small collection of flowers on the edge of Sequim Bay that glowed in the golden hour light, with purple and blue mountains in the background. The colors were so dramatic and perfectly reflective of what I love about Northwestern color.

Hiking up the side of Mt Rainier, I felt surrounded in 360 degrees of epic, mountainous beauty. Every hundred feet or so, I would pause and look around, and each time, I was amazed at the changing vistas around me. Cannon Beach is one of those places you can visit again and again -- like Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. Both destinations have some of my favorite rock formations to paint, too -- Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, and Lone Cypress in Carmel. This painting has a beautiful simplicity and movement that gives me the same feeling of peace as when I viewed the landscape in person.

The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."
