After immersing myself in the beauty of Monet's Garden and seeing his original water lily paintings in several different art museums in France, I was inspired to create my own large-scale oil painting of water lilies. After seeing his garden in person, I realized that the squiggly lines in his pieces were reflections of weeping willow trees. This made me look at water reflections in a whole new light.

Monet painted over 250 oil paintings of his water lily garden in Giverny, France. I can understand why! I spent two days exploring his gardens, and I have enough inspiration to last me years of painting. I love how the lily pond changes in different light -- in this painting, my goal was to capture the cool greens and blues of the water, reflections, and lily pads.

This summer, I took a river boat cruise along the Seine to get inspiration from the many places the first impressionists painted, and I then traveled all across France, from Etretat to Provence, gathering inspiration. This painting captures the beautiful lavender fields of Provence, captured during the golden light of dawn. The stone house nestled among the cypress trees demanded to be included in the painting.

Aix-en-Provence is a beautiful town in the south of France, where you can see the mountain made famous by post-impressionist Cezanne. Erin Hanson puts her modern abstract/expressionist take on impressionism (in her signature style known as Open Impressionism) and paints Cezanne's mountain in wide, lush brushstrokes of oil laid side by side without blending on the canvas.

Inspired by my recent visit to Monet's Garden to see his famous water lilies, I have been painting water lilies and weeping willow reflections ever since! Exploring southern France, I was inspired by the high plateaus in Provence, which are covered in endless lavender fields. Tucked among the lavender fields, I discovered this field of sunflowers right as the sun came up over the mountains. The rich, saturated colors of early morning are captured in this oil painting, while thick, lavish brush strokes bring to life the beauty of the sunflowers.

Exploring the French countryside one misty morning, while our riverboat was docked along the Seine, I saw field after field of pale blue flowers that seemed to glow under the cloudy dawn light. The tour guide explained these were fields of flax, which bloom for only one day. I feel very fortunate to have seen these beautiful flowers during the single day they were in bloom.

When I visited Arles to see van Gogh's stomping grounds, I went to as many olive groves as I could. I found several very old groves -- one boasted several "centennial" trees over one hundred years old. I was inspired by their gnarled branches and unique coloring, just as van Gogh was. Here is a painting of an olive grove near Arles, in southern France.

Exploring the lavender fields on the high plateaus of Provence, France, was an experience I will never forget. I caught two sunsets and two sunrises among the lavender fields, and I have enough inspiration to last me a lifetime! After painting vineyards for so many years, it is fun to paint purple cultivated rows instead. The ground between the lavender plants is covered in warm-hued stones, adding additional texture and color contrast to the landscape. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

This is the first painting I created after my recent inspirational trip to France to follow in the footsteps of the Impressionists. I started out in Paris, visiting many of the parks where the early impressionists and post-impressionists painted. Then I took a river boat along the Seine River, stopping in Giverny to see Monet's Garden and Rouen to see "Monet's" cathedral, and ending in Le Havre and Etretat. This painting of Etretat captures the stunning white limestone cliffs on the northern coast of Normandy, France. Monet was inspired to paint this same unique rock formation 140 years ago.

I visited Etretat on France's Normandy coast to explore the unique cliffs that Monet painted many times. Like Monet, I was inspired by the white limestone cliffs and the reflected colors of the cliffs, the water, and the sky. This is the second painting I have created from this location. Hiking along the trail at the top of the cliffs, I could see wildflowers growing against the turquoise waters below. The golden hour light in June lasted for hours... I loved seeing how the white limestone cliffs changed color until the sun finally set at 9:30 PM. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

I visited Monet's Garden in Giverny, France, for the first time this year. Seeing his water lily pond was like walking into one of his oil paintings, even down to the squiggly reflections created by the overhanging weeping willows. This painting is my tribute to Monet's impressionism.

Inspired by the French impressionists and post-impressionists, I followed in their footsteps and explored the landscapes they painted within France and the Provence countryside. This painting captures a field of sunflowers growing on a high plateau in Provence, near Saint Remy de Provence, where van Gogh lived. Thick brush strokes of oil paint capture the bright sunflower petals as they catch the first light of dawn.

One early morning in June, I explored the vineyards surrounding Bordeaux, France. The small hills and valleys were home to hundreds of tiny vineyards, each producing a different wine. This impressionist painting captures the cool hues of dawn breaking through the rising mists.

Parc Monceau is the most beautiful park I visited while in Paris. Here, I understood why the impressionists painted predominantly in hues of blue and green. The lush gardens and quiet pond around the ancient-looking colonnade transported me back to a simpler time, a peaceful time, when spending a day in the gardens with one's friends was the ordinary thing to do. This painting captures that feeling of peace for me.

A few weeks ago, I was in a riverboat cruising slowly along the Seine River near Giverny, France. I woke up at 5 AM and saw the early glimmer of pre-dawn outside my window. I went out onto the deck, and for two hours, I watched the long golden hour slowly burn the sky with hues of pink and copper. This painting captures the reflections of the Seine I saw that morning.
