I think my favorite view of the Grand Canyon is from Hopi Point on the South Rim. From here, you are more isolated from the crowds, especially at dawn. You can see all the way down to the turquoise waters of the Colorado River. Since Hopi Point is on a protrusion out into the canyon, it feels like you are surrounded by almost 360 degrees of stunning canyon. As the sun slowly clears the horizon, the colors and shadows quickly change during Arizona's desert golden hour light.

The Grand Canyon is a painter's paradise... every morning and every sunset the canyon looks different. This painting was inspired by an early morning out at Hopi Point. As the clouds moved slowly overhead, the first rays of dawn shot through the cloud layer and illuminated the canyon below in an ever-changing dance of color and light. I used thick, expressive strokes of oil paint to capture the strength and majesty of the vista. Hiking out of the Grand Canyon last October, I was able to watch dusk fall over the canyon from a perch about 2/3rd up from the canyon floor. There is about a one-mile vertical elevation change in the Grand Canyon - quite a hike with a pack on your back! This painting captures the restful scenery and sense of wide-open space you experience here. This painting was done on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edges. I started hiking down into the Grand Canyon one early morning, 2 hours before dawn. The trailhead began way back from the main canyon, a few miles' hike from the first uninterrupted view where you could see the wide expanse of the canyon. As I hiked along with my two brothers, large packs on our backs, I watched the sky slowly lighten above us. Eventually, we no longer needed our headlamps, and I could make out the dim shape of the steep cliff beside us. As the hour of daybreak approached nearer, I started jogging anxiously forward, hoping to catch that magical moment of dawn hitting the Grand Canyon. The trail kept switching back and forth behind a large outcropping in the cliff, and I could not get a full view of the canyon. In the distance, I could see the sun starting to hit the first tips of the distant peaks. I urged my brothers forward, trotting forward at a near gallop now, and when the trail finally led me around the final switchback and out into an unimpeded view of the canyon, I skidded to a stop. This is the vision I saw: an ancient manzanita tree catching the bright rays of the sun, mere minutes after daybreak, with the wide expanse of the canyon as the backdrop. In my painting can see the sunlight striking the top of the boulder next to the trail -- five minutes later and the entire trail was bathed in warm light. Five minutes after that, and the Grand Canyon itself was fully lit from top to bottom, and the dramatic and mystical period of dawn had passed. The colors changed rapidly from brilliant gold and purple to a dull orange and brown. I was so happy I had made it to this spot in the trail in time, and I took about a hundred photos during those subsequent minutes, recording the sun slowly descending down the canyon walls. This painting captures the moment of first light I experienced as I came around that final bend in the Grand Canyon. This painting was done over a unique underpainting: where the sunlight is hitting the mountains and tree, I applied 24kt gold leaf beneath the oil paint. The effect is subtle, but at the right angle you can see a little glimmer of gold peeking through the brushstrokes. This painting was done on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edges. It has been framed in a gilded and hand-carved floater frame. This painting was inspired by my recent backpacking trip down into the Grand Canyon. Starting from the canyon's rim 2 hours before dawn, I raced down the long switchbacks down from the rim so I could have a front-and-center view of the sunrise striking down into the canyon. This piece captures all the grandeur of Arizona with loose, impressionistic brush strokes.

Backpacking down into the Grand Canyon produced an overwhelming amount of inspiration for me as an artist... it was hard to know what to paint first when I got back to my studio. This is one of the first pieces I have created from that trip. I love the way the yucca gathered at the edge of the plateau, with the distant layers of cliffs growing blue into the distance, a beautiful contrast against the warm white sand. This painting was done on canvas-wrapped board, and it will arrived framed and ready to hang.

This painting of the Grand Canyon was inspired by the first time I ever saw the Grand Canyon in person, a few years ago. Since then I have revisted the canyon at different times of the day, and this October I will be backpacking down into the canyon to explore it from a different viewpoint. The vibrant colors and repeating patterns of the landscape are surprising and awe-inspiring when seen in person, and I wanted to capture some of that wide expanse of drama in this large oil painting. This painting was created on 1-1/2"-deep wrapped canvas, with the painting continued around the edges of the canvas. This work has been framed in a gold floater frame. Having spent so many years painting the Arizona landscape, it is strange that it wasn't until last November that Erin finally made it to the Grand Canyon. This is a painting of the north rim, a light dusting of snow still on the ground, the air cool and crisp beneath the evergreens.
