Paintings of Valley of Fire State Park

Nevada's Valley of Fire is so named because of the vibrant red Aztec sandstone prominences nestled on the brown and gray limestone floor, which look like plumes of fire when illuminated during sunrise or sunset. These brilliantly hued red rocks are a sight to behold and have inspired western artists like Thomas Moran, Maynard Dixon, R. Brownell McGrew, and Erin Hanson. Hanson's impressionist paintings have captured the beauty, abstraction, and vibrant color found throughout the valley. She paints notable landmarks like Seven Sisters and Balanced Rock, as well as less-known but equally beautiful scenes found throughout Valley of Fire.

Valley of Fire State Park
Valley of Fire State Park is one of my original stomping grounds when I was a rock climber living in Las Vegas and just starting out as a professional painter. I was drawn to the bold colors and strong compositional elements in the red rocks, and my favorite rock formation to paint is called the "Seven Sisters." This painting captures the striking play of light and shadow during the golden hour of dawn. This painting may be viewed in person hanging in <a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/fourseasonseh2026">Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas</a> from April to October, 2026.

Yellow wildflowers grow in abundance along the high cliffs of Torrey Pines State Park, in southern California. The wind-sculpted Torrey Pines catch the early morning light and glow with hues of pink and red. Valley of Fire State Park, an hour north of Las Vegas, is a spectacular place for hiking and camping. Surrounded by fiery red sandstone at every turn, the park is steeped in color and unusual rock formations. As an interesting side note, the very first exhibition of Erin Hanson's Open Impressionism paintings took place in the Valley of Fire visitor center, in 2006. Exhibited: Desert Caballeros Western Museum, as part of the Cowgirl Up! Exhibition, 2019. This painting was done on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edges of the canvas, and it has been framed in a custom, gold-leaf floater frame. The painting arrives ready to hang.

This painting was included in the exhibition <i><a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ContemporaryImpressionismatGoddardCenter" target="_blank">Open Impressionism: The Works of Erin Hanson</i></a>, a 10-year retrospective and study of the development of Open Impressionism at The Goddard Center in Ardmore, OK. Exhibited: <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West</i> at Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah, in 2024. About the Painting: This was one of the first paintings Hanson created of Valley of Fire State Park, where her first landscape exhibition was held in 2007. In this early painting you can see Hanson experimenting with using brush strokes to capture the form and texture of the rocks.

This is a painting of "Elephant Rock," an animal-shaped rock formation in Valley of Fire State Park, an hour north of Vegas. Notice the smoothly blended brush strokes and lack of an underpainting.

The artist had already finished the painting before she saw the clear outlines of the Man in the Mountain in her work.
