Purple irises bloom unexpectedly near Oak Creek in Sedona, Arizona. I was immediately drawn to the contrast of the purple and green flowers against the dusky pink desert background. This piece is also a nod to Vincent van Gogh -- his irises painting was the reason I wanted to be an artist when I started painting in oils at the young age of 8. I love how an impressionism painting can be more beautiful than real life and capture the vivid color and motion of the outdoors with simple brush and paint.

This painting was done on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edge of the canvas. This piece has been framed in a beautiful, hand-carved open impressionist frame.

This painting will be shown in the The Red Rock Show at The Erin Hanson Gallery, June 16th, 2018. Click here to view the other Red Rock paintings.
