When I visited the San Juan Islands in Washington on a recent photo safari, my goal was to find as many paintable madrone trees as possible. This painting captures some of my favorite madrones, which I found on Orcas Island. I love the way their red, flaky bark looks against the Northwestern backdrop of blues and greens. I used thick, expressive brushstrokes of oil paint to capture a feeling of movement and transient light.

The first time I saw Mt Rainier, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the mountain. It reared high overhead, filling the senses. This painting captures the beauty of Rainier behind the ancient and winter-swept noble firs that grow at the base of the peak. Thick brush strokes of oil paint laid side by side communicate the majesty of the mountain. This painting may be viewed in person hanging in <a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/saffronfields2026">Saffron Fields Vineyard</a> tasting room in the Willamette Valley from April to June, 2026.

I returned to Sequim this year to photograph Washington’s lavender fields again, but foremost on my mind was finding a field of red poppies growing beside the lavender—a scene I had painted several times from photographs I’d taken a decade ago. When I returned to the same location, I discovered the poppies had been replaced by Shasta daisies. I did, however, find one small patch of red poppies still remaining, growing tenaciously beneath a white picket fence bordering the lavender field. I loved the way the red poppies contrasted with the white fence—and this painting was born.

Ruby Beach was my favorite part of Olympic National Park in Washington state. The dramatic rock stacks created some of the most interesting coastline I've ever painted. I loved how the entire landscape became bathed in rich hues of orange and purple as the sun sank to the horizon.

I returned to Washington this year on photo safari, and one of my goals for the trip was to find this one meadow of red poppies that I had seen ten years ago growing next to a field of lavender in Sequim. I returned to the same location, but unfortunately, the field of poppies had been replaced by Shasta daisies (which I ended up painting anyway)... but as I was walking around the landscape between the lavender fields, I discovered this one tiny patch of red poppies still remaining from all those years ago, tucked away underneath a white fence. I took dozens of photos of this tiny patch of poppies, and this is the first painting I created of that memory.

The trail to the summit of Mt Rainier is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done. Lush grasses and abundant wildflowers blanket the landscape in greens and pops of color. The peak of Mt Rainier looms above, larger than I can possibly capture on a canvas, golden clouds of fog clinging to the sides of the mountain. I used thick brush strokes of oil paint laid side-by-side on the canvas to capture the strong shapes and texture of the mountain. Delicate blooms in lavender, white, and yellow set off the foreground.

This painting was inspired by the first golden hour I experienced on my photo safari through Washington state this year. I traveled through Sequim, the Olympic Peninsula, Mt Rainier, and the San Juan Islands, but the first scene I wanted to paint was this small collection of flowers on the edge of Sequim Bay that glowed in the golden hour light, with purple and blue mountains in the background. The colors were so dramatic and perfectly reflective of what I love about Northwestern color.

I stayed at Paradise Inn at the base of Mt. Rainier to get inspiration from the majestic peak. In this painting, I captured the beautiful Noble Firs that grow at the base of Mt. Rainier--I absolutely love their wind-swept branches, looking as if they had braved centuries of icy winds and snow-laden winters.

I discovered this arbor of trees when exploring landscapes to paint during the golden hour in Sequim Bay, Washington. Watching the first morning light hit Mt Rainier from Tipsoo Lake made me appreciate the beauty of the Cascades in a whole new light.
