When I visited France to visit the locales the impressionists had painted, I had to stop by Provence to see if the lavender fields there were as beautiful as I had heard. When I drove up onto the high and windy plateaus of Provence, with the Swiss Alps far in the distance, I was immediately captivated by the rolling plains of purple lavender rows. This painting captures the feeling of being in Provence, surrounded by beauty in every direction.

I returned to Washington this year on photo safari, and one of my goals for the trip was to find this one meadow of red poppies that I had seen ten years ago growing next to a field of lavender in Sequim. I returned to the same location, but unfortunately, the field of poppies had been replaced by Shasta daisies (which I ended up painting anyway)... but as I was walking around the landscape between the lavender fields, I discovered this one tiny patch of red poppies still remaining from all those years ago, tucked away underneath a white fence. I took dozens of photos of this tiny patch of poppies, and this is the first painting I created of that memory.

I love painting the lavender fields in Sequim on the Olympic Peninsula, in Washington state. The colors are so vibrant and alive--they stir my blood and make me reach for my brushes. This painting captures a field of white daisies in front of dark purple lavender rows, with the Olympic mountains starkly blue in the background. Erin Hanson creates landscapes in oil using her iconic Open Impressionism style. I spent two days exploring the lavender fields around Valensole, Provence. This region of France has steep-edged, high plateaus where lavender is grown. With dawn sunlight beginning at 5AM and lasting until 10PM, I had very long days to soak up the beautiful colors and changing light of French lavender fields. I also saw the occasional sunflower field, which was an added bonus!

This summer, I took a river boat cruise along the Seine to get inspiration from the many places the first impressionists painted, and I then traveled all across France, from Etretat to Provence, gathering inspiration. This painting captures the beautiful lavender fields of Provence, captured during the golden light of dawn. The stone house nestled among the cypress trees demanded to be included in the painting.

Some of the most striking imagery I saw on my Washington photo safari was these Shasta daisies growing in front of a lavender farm, right on the northernmost coast of Washington. The abundance of white blooms was so striking, I just had to paint it as soon as I returned home to my studio.

Exploring the lavender fields on the high plateaus of Provence, France, was an experience I will never forget. I caught two sunsets and two sunrises among the lavender fields, and I have enough inspiration to last me a lifetime! After painting vineyards for so many years, it is fun to paint purple cultivated rows instead. The ground between the lavender plants is covered in warm-hued stones, adding additional texture and color contrast to the landscape. This painting will be displayed in my "<a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ReflectionsoftheSeine">Impressions of the Seine</a>" collection release at my gallery on September 14th, 2024.

The lavender fields of Provence are everything I imagined they would be... endless rolling hills and fields covered in perfect rows of lavender. Since Valensole is high on a plateau, I felt strangely isolated in the high elevation, with my true horizon line hidden from me. The blue mountains in the distance are actually the peaks of the Swiss Alps, in the next country over!

Sequim, Washington, is awash in color in the summer, when the lavender fields are in bloom and the air is warm and scented. I captured this image of multi-colored poppies while I was visiting Sequim to explore the lavender fields. I loved how bright the poppies looked against the dark purple and blue of the lavender.
