Early Works

Erin Hanson began painting in her iconic Open Impressionism style when she began rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon. Through the process of painting the rocks she was climbing, with their flat planes and shapes, sharply defined cracks, and bright sandstone colors, Erin developed her techniques of Open Impressionism. This collection of early works shows some examples of her first foray into Open Impressionism.

About the Painting: An early painting of Arches National Park, here you can see how Hanson was experimenting to figure out how to make the colors in her paint as saturated and bright as the landscapes she saw in person. This classic painting is being sold on consignment. Exhibited: St George Art Museum, Utah, in a solo exhibition celebrating the National Park's centennial: <i>Erin Hanson's Painted Parks</i>, 2016. Her style of painting in distinct brushstrokes separated in mosaic-like shapes was developed in her attempt to capture the planes and dark cracks in the rock faces she loved to climb. Erin's iconic style "Open Impressionism" is now taught in art schools worldwide, and her pieces hang in the permanent collections of many museums in the United States. This rare painting was made available for us to sell on consignment. This painting captures Red Rock Canyon with an abstracted style. "Willow Spring" is a traditional ("trad") climbing destination in Red Rock. The work was done on 3/4" stretched canvas, and the piece arrives framed in a new 3.5"-wide black and gold plein air frame.
