I painted this view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley (also known as the "Fruit Loop" because of all the fruit orchards). The sunflowers were in late bloom, and the first light of morning cast a ruddy glow on the snow-dappled peak of Mount Hood. Thick, expressive brush strokes laid side by side without blending create a highly textured oil painting that is alive with motion and vibrant color.

Camping at one of the many lakes in the Cascade range, I woke up one morning to see the water so still that the reflections were mirror-still. The light was so clear and crisp that I could see details on the snow-capped mountains far in the distance. This painting captures the feeling of waking up in the cold morning air, surrounded by the beauty of Nature.

The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."

Oregon's Cascade mountain range is famous for its Three Sisters peaks, which can be seen from Bend to Sisters, Oregon. This painting captures the soft dawn light on a clear summer morning in June. I visited the Oregon Cascades for the first time a few years ago, and I was amazed by the drop-dead gorgeous colors I saw there. During the day I saw greens and blues in every hue imaginable, and when the sun went down I was again awe-struck by one of the most amazing sunsets I had ever seen. This painting re-creates the emotions I felt during the trip with loose, painterly brush strokes and plenty of color.
