Traveling through Norway, I experienced so many fjords in different lighting and weather conditions. I loved how the reflections in the water could change suddenly and dramatically. This painting captures a view from high up the side of Geirangerfjord, with two ancient pine tree sentinels looking over the fjord. I have never seen more waterfalls than when I visited Norway for ten days. This painting captures the beautiful aquamarine colors of a small river running through the steep Norwegian mountains.

Soft hues of caramel and buttermilk are reflected in the calm waters of a Norwegian fjord. I first saw the potential for this painting while driving along a road that bordered this fjord. I pulled the car over and scrambled down the bank, pushing my way through pine trees and undergrowth. When I got to the water's edge, I saw this perfect composition of curving waters and reflected cliffsides. I captured this scene of the warm light of golden hour with impasto, painterly brush strokes. I came across this valley in Norway on my way to Geirangerfjord. The golden hour of dawn filled the valley with rich hues of orange and purple. I ended up missing my ferry because I couldn't drag myself away from the beautiful turquoise waters and lush autumn colors. This painting captures everything I loved about Norway--how every landscape I saw was worthy of becoming a painting.

Everywhere I visited in Norway was absolutely stunning. The dramatic fjords turn the landscape into a paradise for painters. This piece captures the view from Ålesund, Norway. The overcast clouds in October parted right at sunset, letting the golden hour rays bathe the landscape in hues of orange. I use thick brush strokes of oil paint to communicate motion and texture in the landscape, in my signature Open Impressionism style.

This is the first painting I created after my trip, capturing a fjord near Alesund during the golden hours of dawn.

Naeroydalen is a popular valley in Norway that has spectacular and dramatic cliffs. This painting captures the rich colors and dramatic view from Stalheim Hotel, which is perched high on the side of the mountain and is only accessible via steep switchbacks. Thick brushstrokes of oil paint laid side by side on a viridian-toned canvas create a mosaic of color and texture that keeps the eye roaming through the piece.
