Driving the curving roads into Elk (just south of Mendocino), I came suddenly upon this vineyard in full autumn glory -- pumpkin oranges and sunflower yellows. I love it when vineyards are planted so that the rows of vines seem to overlap and form contrasting patterns in the hills. It brings me into the painting, letting my eye explore the contours of the sloping hillsides. This painting captures everything I love about painting California wine country.

Looking southward from a high bluff in Mendocino County, I watch crashing waves and swirling turquoise waters as far as I can see. The rocky coastline of Northern California, dotted with sea stacks and steep cliffs, is a landscape painter's dream. I used a limited palette of five colors to capture the rich hues of this coastal scene. I try not to overlap my brush strokes when I paint, which gives my brush strokes a highly textured, painterly feel.

I visited Mendocino for the first time this summer, and I was struck by the bold shapes of the rocky coastline and the deep rich color of the landscape. I saw wildflowers there I had never seen before, and the dramatic weather changes gave me some great cloudscapes for painting! This painting was done on 1-1/2" canvas, with the painting continued around the edges. The painting will be framed in a custom-made, hand-carved floater frame, and it arrives wired and easy to hang. Our hearts are with the residents and businesses impacted by the recent fires that have spread across the Northern California wine regions. Erin just recently spent time exploring Mendocino and Napa for inspiration and was sad to see that the very landscapes she had just been painting are now burnt dramatically to the ground. It is our goal to help the area reemerge from this tragedy and will donate 10% of the proceeds for this painting <i>Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund </i> and <i>Sonoma Humane Society</i>. For the next 30 days we will also be donating 100% of all proceeds from her <a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/WineCountryBook" target="_blank">California Wine Country</a> book sales to these hardworking and much valued non-profits.
