This painting on board was created during the artist's Red Rock Canyon rock climbing days. Waking up before dawn was common for climbers, to avoid the heat, and there were many beautiful desert colors seen in the pre-dawn light.

"Willow Spring" was one of the first paintings Erin Hanson ever painted in the style of Open Impressionism, painted while she was developing her style and rock climbing at Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Her style of painting in distinct brushstrokes separated in mosaic-like shapes was developed in her attempt to capture the planes and dark cracks in the rock faces she loved to climb. Erin's iconic style "Open Impressionism" is now taught in art schools worldwide, and her pieces hang in the permanent collections of many museums in the United States. This rare painting was made available for us to sell on consignment. This painting captures Red Rock Canyon with an abstracted style. "Willow Spring" is a traditional ("trad") climbing destination in Red Rock. The work was done on 3/4" stretched canvas, and the piece arrives framed in a new 3.5"-wide black and gold plein air frame.

This painting was included in the exhibition <i><a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ContemporaryImpressionismatGoddardCenter" target="_blank">Open Impressionism: The Works of Erin Hanson</i></a>, a 10-year retrospective and study of the development of Open Impressionism at The Goddard Center in Ardmore, OK. Exhibited: <i>Erin Hanson: Landscapes of the West</i> at Sears Art Museum in St. George, Utah, in 2024. About the Painting: When Hanson first began painting Red Rock Canyon, she painted a series of close-up rock abstracts. She thought at the time she might focus entirely on the abstract nature of the desert, but instead she fell in love with painting the wide open vistas and landscapes that would dominate her portfolio in later years.
