Paintings of Arches National Park

Utah's Arches National Park is a wonder of red rock splendor. This park is filled with massive rock formations, including the famous Delicate Arch and Balanced Rock monuments. Erin Hanson hiked this park during several seasons, painting the flora of Arches during the spring rains as well as the clear winter light that can only be found in the frigid months. Hanson's desert paintings use pure pigments to showcase the red rock fins, lesser-known arches, boulders, and the surrounding mountains -- along with some of the more famous sites.

When you first enter Arches National Park, one of my favorite vistas to paint is immediately to your left-hand side. You can see beautiful fins of red rock sandstone overlapping into the far distance. It is most beautiful at dawn. Arches National Park is one of my favorite national parks to paint. The clean, abstract rock formations make great painting compositions, and the buttery colors of sandstone rock allow me to use the full range of my palette from creamy yellow to butternut orange to vivid purple. This painting was inspired by a hike I did to Delicate Arch (in Arches National Park) a few years ago. To catch the early morning light on Delicate Arch, I awoke at 3am to begin the hike up the sandstone slabs that culminated in the rock formations around the arch. The brilliant colors and high vantage point, surrounded by the quiet solitude of the park, have been ingrained in my mind ever since. "Delicate Arch" was created on 1-1/2" canvas, with the sides of the canvas painted as a continuation of the painting. The piece arrives framed in a 23kt gold leaf floater frame.

Exhibited: St George Art Museum, Utah, in a solo exhibition celebrating the National Park's centennial: <i>Erin Hanson's Painted Parks</i>, 2016. <i><a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ContemporaryImpressionismatGoddardCenter" target="_blank">Open Impressionism: The Works of Erin Hanson</i></a>, a 10-year retrospective and study of the development of Open Impressionism at The Goddard Center in Ardmore, OK.
