Paintings of Snow

Erin Hanson's impressionistic snow paintings are inspired by American landscapes and national parks such as Zion, Bryce, and the Sierra Nevadas. On day five of a recent backpacking trip through Zion National Park, it snowed almost all day, the clouds occasionally parting to expose brilliant blue skies overhead. The last leg of the journey from Kolob Canyon to the East Gate involved steep, winding switchbacks that cut narrowly along the steep cliffs. The rocks were beautifully cut into stair shapes when the going got too steep. This painting captures that adventure and grandeur of the moment. This painting was created on a gallery-depth canvas with the painting continued around the edges. The painting will arrive in a beautiful hardwood floater frame, ready to hang. This painting was inspired during a hike from Kolob Canyon to the East Entrance of Zion National Park. When hiking the West Rim Trail, the snow was coming down thickly, covering the desert floor with a fluffy white blanket. The brush strokes in this painting are thick and expressive, creating a beautiful mosaic of color and texture.

The artist took a special trip to Bryce Canyon in November, especially to see the red hoodoos against fresh snowfall. The 14-mile hike through the canyon has been inspiring a new series of paintings of reflected light and beautiful patterns of blue shadows in the snow.
