The Orange Show 2016

This is a special piece I created for <i>The Orange Show</i>, in the spirit of making the orange/yellow colors pop by creating a background entirely of blue and purple. The sunflowers are captured here in vivid shades that come alive on the canvas, the brush strokes thick and impressionistic. When I was ten years old, one of my favorite things to paint in oils was the roses and other flowers from my mother's garden, and it was great to re-visit the floral still life concept. This painting was done on 2"-deep canvas, with the painting continued around the edges. This piece has been framed in a gold floater frame to set off the colors in the painting. This is the first painting in the Orange Series, a special collection I am creating for <i>The Orange Show</i>, which will be hanging in my gallery during the month of October. This series will be concentrating on the nuances and subtle beauties of the color orange. I will be playing with new color combinations and effects of light. This painting is available for purchase now, but it will be shipped at the end of October. This painting, Gilded Path, is a special piece in that it has 24kt gold leaf applied to the underpainting. The gold leaf peeks through the brush strokes in a subtle manner, catching the light when you look at the painting at different angles. In the photographs above, you can see how the painting changes when viewed from different angles. This painting has been framed in an Open Impressionist frame. These frames are one-of-a-kind, hand carved in the US and hand-gilded with 23kt gold leaf. The Open Impressionsist frame is a beautiful blend of classic American impressionist frames and contemporary "floater frames," just as my style is a unique blend of the classic and contemporary. The frame is designed to stand away from the edge of the canvas, leaving a 1/4" gap around the painting, which allows you to experience every brush stroke on the canvas. This "open" style of framing gives the painting room to expand and fill the eye, without losing any of the vivid color or delicate motion of the brush strokes.

This painting is part of the Orange Series, a special collection I am creating for <i>The Orange Show</i>, which will be hanging in my gallery during the month of October. This series will be concentrating on the nuances and subtle beauties of the color orange. I will be playing with new color combinations and effects of light. This painting is available for purchase now, but it will be shipped at the end of October. This painting brings to life the warm color of an early summer dawn in Paso Robles. I remember waking up before dawn this morning and driving up and down these very hilly roads along the southern outskirts of Paso. I had never explored this particular region of vineyards, and it felt like I was discovering a whole new realm of oaks and steeply graded hills. The sun came up warm and orange, peeking through the slightly hazy morning fog, casting a vibrant glow across the landscape. I use these impressionistic brush strokes and exploratory colors to try to re-capture the sense of adventure and discovery from that dawn. This painting of the Grand Canyon was inspired by the first time I ever saw the Grand Canyon in person, a few years ago. Since then I have revisted the canyon at different times of the day, and this October I will be backpacking down into the canyon to explore it from a different viewpoint. The vibrant colors and repeating patterns of the landscape are surprising and awe-inspiring when seen in person, and I wanted to capture some of that wide expanse of drama in this large oil painting. This painting was created on 1-1/2"-deep wrapped canvas, with the painting continued around the edges of the canvas. This work has been framed in a gold floater frame. Following the Colorado River north of Moab and Arches National Park, early one morning in January, I discovered this beautiful vista of ragged buttes and red rock plateaus that caught the brilliant orange of a winter sunrise. The Colorado River was wide and smooth, reflecting all the ambient color.
