Paintings of the Northwest

Discover Erin Hanson's northwest landscapes, inspired by Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. From the rich colors of Willamette Valley wine country to the granite peaks of Glacier National Park, these paintings capture the vibrant beauty of the northwest. There is an impressive diversity in the northwest: within one day you can travel from the high desert landscapes of Smith Rock over the alpine mountain range of the Cascades, down through the rolling hills of Willamette wine country, and finally out to the iconic coastline of Cannon Beach. The northwest is also home to a wealth of flower fields, from Sequim's famous lavender fields to the tulip festival in Woodburn. There are sunflowers, daffodils, and irises galore, and Erin has been eagerly collecting material to paint every spring. Now that Erin herself resides in the northwest, she is daily inspired by the changing seasons, wide-open countryside, big skies, bold color, and beautiful trees.

A crimson field of clover caught my eye as I was driving through Oregon's Willamette Valley. One of the best things about living in the Northwest is the incredible saturated color everywhere I look. The moody colors of an overcast sky were the perfect setting for this painting.

The view of the Columbia River Gorge from Crown Point is one of the most beautiful views of Oregon that I have ever experienced. When I was there, I met a man from Portland who said he drove out every week to see the sunset from Crown Point. From the 180-degree sunset I experienced, I can see why!

Cannon Beach is one of those places you can visit again and again -- like Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. Both destinations have some of my favorite rock formations to paint, too -- Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, and Lone Cypress in Carmel. This painting has a beautiful simplicity and movement that gives me the same feeling of peace as when I viewed the landscape in person.

The view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley is one of my favorites to paint. I love how large and looming the mountain peak appears, and I love the contrast of snow-covered peaks against orchards and wildflowers. I pre-mix my palette from only five basic colors, and then I lay my brush strokes side by side, in a technique that allows me to be expressive and free when I paint. I call my style "Open Impressionism."

I painted this view of Mt Hood from the Hood River Valley (also known as the "Fruit Loop" because of all the fruit orchards). The sunflowers were in late bloom, and the first light of morning cast a ruddy glow on the snow-dappled peak of Mount Hood. Thick, expressive brush strokes laid side by side without blending create a highly textured oil painting that is alive with motion and vibrant color.
