Paintings of Zion National Park

The world-famous Zion National Park in Utah is home to some of the tallest sandstone cliffs in the world as well as incredible, ever-narrowing canyons carved over the centuries by the Virgin River. The landscapes are stunning and majestic, and it is without a doubt one of the favorite haunts of artist Erin Hanson. Hanson has returned to the park many times to paint its unique landscapes, and she has held two solo exhibitions in the area: one at the St. George Art Museum and one at the Zion Human History Museum.

I love walking along the river bed in Zion Canyon. Red rock cliffs reach high into the sky around me, and all around me is silent except for the moving sound of water and the wind rustling through the cottonwood leaves. The view from the bridge in Zion, overlooking the river and the Watchman in the distance, is one of my favorite views to paint in Zion National Park. The turquoise waters seem to capture the very light from the darkening sky. During a 50-mile backpack across Zion National Park, I discovered many inspiring landscapes. One of my favorite was Hop Valley, a day's hike from Kolob Canyon. The flat wash of the canyon floor was bounded by short, steep cliffs on either side, creating dramatic shadows behind the autumn cottonwoods. This painting has been framed in a gold floater frame. This painting was displayed at the Zion Art Museum (located in Zion National Park) during the summer of 2017, for the exhibition <i><a href="https://www.erinhanson.com/Event/ErinHansonZionMuseum" target="_blank">Impressions of Zion</a></i>.

Inspired by a hike through southern Utah, this painting captures the low, overhanging branches of the gnarled cottonwoods. In early autumn, the cottonwoods had mostly dropped their leaves, and the red dirt path was covered in coin-shaped golden drops of color. The day had been drenched in rain, saturating all the colors and covering the canyon floor with a fresh bed of leaves. This painting was created over 24 karat gold leaf, applied directly to the canvas as an "underpainting." The thin sheets of genuine gold gleam with subtle light from between the brush strokes, catching the eye and making the painting seem to glow from within. On day five of a recent backpacking trip through Zion National Park, it snowed almost all day, the clouds occasionally parting to expose brilliant blue skies overhead. The last leg of the journey from Kolob Canyon to the East Gate involved steep, winding switchbacks that cut narrowly along the steep cliffs. The rocks were beautifully cut into stair shapes when the going got too steep. This painting captures that adventure and grandeur of the moment. During a 5-day backpack through Zion, we were faced with a solid day of rain while hiking the high plateaus. Finally at sunset, the clouds parted and we saw amazing, color-drenched vistas all around us. This painting captures the last light seen through the windswept pines on the plateau.
